So I’m thinking about moving my kid to another gym. Not because of any drama or anything — purely because it has a more convenient schedule for me. You know, the one doing all the school/work pickups and drop-offs. The gym also has a pretty solid reputation, so it’s not like I’m throwing him into some sketchy warehouse.

He’s only in pre-comp, but is it frowned upon to switch mid-season instead of waiting for the end of season (in September for us).

Also, for those of you who’ve done this before — did you get hit with any fees? Because, fun fact, I haven’t finished my volunteer hours yet. 🙃

Would love to hear your stories, opinions, or any reassurance that I am or am not the gym parent equivalent of a supervillain.

You can move whenever you want, if the other gym will take you. I’m in the US and the competition season ends with Nationals in May and then the transition to the next season starts. That’s when we do try-outs for team and they start planning out the new training groups and the summer schedule. Our boys move up from pre-comp to team in June, which is pretty typical. We also have a totally different schedule during the summer compared to the school year.

A new gym may take you now or they may want your son to wait for team try-outs. Be careful that you don’t move based on the pre-comp schedule only to have it change in a couple weeks!

As far as fees go, that is entire gym-specific and you will have to refer to your contract to find out how that works where you are.
