People always say vault but beam falls have cost teams their spots in Regionals and Nationals … think back to when 3 beam falls by Georgia cost Jay Clark his job (albeit he failed up) and more recently, last year when Oklahoma had multiple falls on beam …

Yes... but there is not a lack of athletes that can perform well on any given Sunday on beam. Vault is a true physical abilities thing right now... there simply aren't enough gymnasts across the nation that could put 10.0 starts on the board. That's why... as of right now... a nice 10.0 start vault will get you on the radar all in itself.

Oklahoma also started that meet with multiple falls on vault

The issue isn’t that they can’t perform well on beam that they can’t stay on the beam …i still say people miss Nationals more because of beam than vault… you can have 5 good 9.95 vaults do well but 3 falls on beam you don’t overcome.

This is irrelevant to the point. This whole thread is about recruiting... not teams missing championships due to falls.

It is relevant because someone brought up what event do kids get recruited for if they are only good on one event… and i say beam is one event that is hard for a team to do well on with falls (<9.9) but with vault, the 10.0 SV is nice, but you could still do well as a team with 9.95 SV (a la Chae Campbell) that are nailed…. Sorry you don’t agree but i think a kid with a Yfull like hers is recruitable.

Not a lot of college coaches out there saying they are struggling to recruit beam lineups.

I'm really trying hard to see it as you argue... and I kind of do. If I could recruit an athlete that could not fall on beam... sure... I would do that.

However... then you lost me again with Chae Campbell... recruit the Yurchenko full that is so good that they can actually do a DTY??? I think you just proved my point (scroll to the third one)...

I asked the question if an athlete is going to be recruited for a single event what event is most likely to be heavily recruited. It makes sense to me that it would be vault then bars because it seems to me there are a lot more athletes in the pool with floor and beam skills having the difficulty and scores that colleges want. It seems there are less athletes in the mix that have the skills and scores for bars and vault. I can see where teams not having a line up with 5 10.0 sv on vault really has the potential to make a big difference in team scores.

A secondary question I have is what’s your (everyone’s) opinion on the upcoming roster limits making it more or less likely for teams to look for specialists vs more AA athletes.

Re: roster limits and if it’ll make AAers more in-demand. I don’t think so, at least not for schools that don’t already rely on AAers. I think there are enough beam/floor athletes that coaches can and will still go for those to leave room to grab the 10.0 sv vaults and reliable bars. Plus it will be multiple years before the current classes graduate, so they’re still building rosters around who they already have. IMO, it could be 3-6 years before we see how roster limits affect lineup management and recruiting choices by event.

I find it interesting that we still see Vault being a top recruitable event. We are in region 1 and I saw big vaults all day long.. but not bars.. or beam.. Floor and vault seemed to get a lot of high scores.

No my point on Chae is you can recruit someone like her with a Yfull so good she scores the 9.95 …. And if you had a few of those good vaults, and maybe 1-2 10.0 SV vaults, you’d be safer than getting a squad of athletes counting falls on other events …. The SV deficit on vault (of say .15 over 3 vaults) could be overcome on the other events.

I do understand your point... I can't say how I would recruit if I was actually in that position... too many variables... different perspectives create different actions.
