    Parents Why Gymnastics?

Because our kids are strong, not risk adverse, and not afraid to say "it hurts but it's only pain." In short, it's cheaper than bail!

    WAG Coach/Judge Parent/Judge

As parents, we all have it in our power to address perceived or actual unfair practices in gymnastics judging, especially at the compulsory levels. We can study, take the judges' exam, and spend our weekends on the road judging without bias. Or in my personal case, study for the exam, watch...

    Please send vestibular faries

Hi, Others have posted they've had good luck in this forum so... Over the last couple of weeks, DD has stopped critical skills in every event due to fear. Her coaches say the cure is time...thanks in large part to dunno's recent posts on the topic, we can smile and agree. Problem is, the...

    Judges' Room at meets

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Hot, healthy, and lots of options seem to be the theme here. I appreciate your thoughts, and no doubt the judges at our meet will as well!

    Judges' Room at meets

When you go to a meet and there is a judges' room for meals, what food items do you hope to see or dread seeing when you walk in? I've been asked to oversee the judges' room at our next home meet, so I thought I'd ask the experts! The question also applies to coaches' rooms. Thanks!

So about the women's team finals?

I'm flattered that you have me confused with Bogwoppit, but I know nothing useful like links! If you look on the right hand side of the main page, you'll see Bogwoppit posted something about the on-line olympic viewing schedule. I've just been clicking there, then selecting "gymnastics" and...

So about the women's team finals?

Having now gone back to see the interviews on NBC.com, what really strikes me is what a class act Alicia and the other girls are. I imagine that they've been working on their cliches, but they really seemed to mean it about supporting each other. And looking at the body language when Shawn was...

    Parents What's your summer schedule???

I'm with bigtiny. We not only don't have a schedule, we don't know what coaches the girls will have. But we do know the fees!!!

When is a parent "too involved"?

Thanks Rainee! I would add: 11. Another parent says, of a child who is not only not yours, but competing in another level/age group/team, "she did great, getting that 36 at the last meet!" and you absent-mindedly reply, "36.475 and that with a fall on the backwalkover." ROTFL

Do you have a say in your daughters Floor Music?

Hi Lannamavity, Nope, unless I've misread it, it's Q&A open discussion, not the parent's forum. If I'm wrong, please mirror this to the Q&A. In either case, please don't just bow out...you have saved DD's coaches from questions that I know you coaches must get tired of hearing--the...

    Gymnastic History Dates

Well, I would love to see you include the first woman to swing bars (look at some of the routines from the 50s to see just how different it was!) and the first woman to have the bars further apart where they are now. I have no idea who these folks were, but it would surprise me if no one here...

    Parents Breaking down age groups

Hi BigTiny, I sympathize. We've had the opposite problem, with one age group having only 3 to 6 girls, and the gym going out ONE place per event, while the next age group had 25 or so girls in it. Hard to tell the little ones, "there is no silver medal." Especially when the next group goes out...

    Parents Private lessons

DD has done privates, and benefited greatly from them. They've been primarily to work on what scares her at a pace that wouldn't be fair to the larger group at practice. For example, I'm budgeting some for that back walkover on the high beam. She has the technique and can do them all day long...

    Parents wrong age group

The girl is certainly not winning all the medals, but she could have a chance to go to the provincials in the older age group, but the younger group cannot go. What would you do? Do I say something to her Mom, who doesn't know the ins and outs of rules, or do I tell the coach what I learned...

    Parents Excessive sweating

Gymnomore, if you're in the US you might have her try Certain Dry if you haven't done so. It can be hard to find and you MUST follow the package directions for results, but it's notably effective within a week or so. It's used at night and there's a complementary product for morning.

    Little Girls in Pretty Boxes

Oh, this is not good...I am also a junkie and will be checking back later tonight to see if the next part is up. And I am slightly ashamed to admit that I am mentally giving the girls and crazed parents names--including me!-- that correspond to DD's gym community. I'm also speculating that...

    Deduction for?

The USAG compulsory program text lists the following under Deductions Taken from the Average by Chief Judge: "Lack of presentation by gymnast before and/or after exercise: each time .10" It's on page 163.

    Snow Day!!!!

Hi Bogwoppit, What a great reminder for those of us further south to bring in some wood for the fire, check the supplies of coco, popcorn and UHT milk, and fantasize about what fun a snow day might bring us. Hope you enjoyed the break!
