I’m just seeing this post so I suppose I’ll join in. I am a mom of 4 young girls. The oldest is 7 (almost 8) and getting ready to compete level 3 or 4 this next season. I’m thinking 3 but 4 isn’t totally ruled out yet. We got into gymnastics as a way to get out of the house when she was a...
Oh man. I have been in your shoes. My daughter has sensitive skin and is VERY particular about how clothes feel. I would definitely go with GymGear. My daughter basically lives in it. She also likes SylviaP but they have a second layer in the front so she won’t wear them in the summer.
Thank you all for the advice! I diligently kept it moist with just some polysporin (because I had it on hand) and it looked much better after 48 hours when she went back to the gym. Her coach made her a tape grip and she said it didn’t bother her at all. Now, she’s getting 3 days to heal before...
Thank you for the advice! She’s working on a consistent kip so she can compete level 4 this coming season. It’s the only thing holding her back and that is where she is getting rips. I wasn’t at practice but the coach said she was trying so hard and so many times on the kip and that’s when she...
Hey, parents. My 7 year old has suddenly started getting nasty rips. She hasn’t had any in probably a year or more and now she’s had 2 bad ones in the last couple weeks. I can see on her palms where she is about to get another couple too. How can I help her hands? Is there a way to help these...
I’m just a parent but I also think she is wrapping around the bar too early. My daughter just went through this learning process too and it has definitely been a challenge. Everyone says it takes a combination of strength, coordination and timing. Most recently, my daughter was struggling to do...
I generally agree with you but I think it’s more concerning when a significant portion of the level 3s have to repeat and have been training 16 hours for the last year.
We had a very similar experience in a lot of ways at our first gym and I completely agree with your take on this.
In our case, my daughter had just finished a level 2 season. I had had some concerns about the gym structure and coaching but didn’t know any better as it was our first gymnastics...
They got them in October. I didn’t realize everyone was getting them because we missed the time when the coaches sized the girls for them and I thought her group wouldn’t need them yet. I was surprised when the grips order came in and everyone else got them. That prompted a discussion with her...
It’s nice to see so many still saying Kip before grips since that is the direction we have gone. Hopefully, she doesn’t have a hard time relearning after she does get them. I do wonder why we are seeing so many gymnasts getting them before kips though.
As I mentioned before, there’s no way we...
We have only ever been a part of two gyms but both seem to put the girls in grips before kips. That’s kind of what prompted my question. I feel like we are seeing a lot of lower level girls with grips from other gyms at competitions too but I also have heard multiple coaches and athletes say...
I like your point about small hands. It seems like we are seeing more and more girls using grips earlier in competitions even though so many on here say to wait. In the fall, when a lot of the girls at our gym were getting their grips, I talked to her coach about this. It seems like the gym just...
I’m not planning to say anything. Just curious to see responses and if people think they generally are helpful or harmful before girls get their kip. I have another daughter coming up through the pre-team too so will have to go through this decision again. My older daughter is so close on her...
For those with more experience, what are your thoughts on getting grips before or after girls get their kip? Last fall, my daughter’s training group were told they could get grips and my daughter chose not to. She was barely 7 and has small hands. She only competed level 2 so really didn’t need...
