What are the different kind of hurdles for a floor routine start (for cartwheel, roundoff)? I heard there is a Step Hurdle, Power hurdle. Does anyone have a list and their descriptions?
Recently I have been having an off period in gymnastics. I have been busy with the end of school, finals, etc and its made focusing on gymnastics difficult.
I have been under rotating my twists on floor, falling on my turn on beam, and struggling with my pak salto.
But nothing is more annoying...
What methods do you use for teaching a power hurdle (I think that the English name, it is a jump from 2 feet to a stepout, which usually goes before a round off) I do have a method that works with a few girls, but not all of them get it, especially the younger girls in the group.
I have a girl who is a righty. She cartwheel right, turns right, round off right. However, when she runs to vault she takes off on her right and her left knee comes up to hurdle before punching the board. It's a good hurdle and I'm wondering it it matters that she does it on her non dominant...
It seems that I am asking a lot of questions here this week. Possibly, we are ready for our head coach to return after a summer with the replacements :) So last night, one of the "fill in" coaches, who is a really good coach technically but is not a great communicator, spend the last 25...
After the local gymnastics gym where I coached rec shut down, I decided to start a small program out of a school gymnasium, primarily focusing on rec gymnastics and solid foundations. I have ended up with a small group of rather exceptional kiddos age 7-9, who I plan on competing a strong girls'...
It seems to me that hurdle styles can be roughly split into three catgeories:
1) Arms reaching upward, as close to vertical as reasonably possible (seems to be the most standard approach)
2) Arms reaching forward (I believe this style is favored by Tony Retrosi, among others)
3) Arms off-set...
What is the ideal hurdle? I was watching Viktoria Komova and noticed that her hurdle is different and she has straight legs. The other style with bent front leg (don't know how to describe it better) is how I was taught and I want to know which is the better/preferred hurdle and what advantage...
I heard today that you are no longer allowed to use a hurdle mat for vault unless you are using it for your hands (like doing a yurchenko) I heard it was because a gymnast slipped on one and broke her neck and now their is a big law suit. Is that true? Also are they doing something different...
I have read old posts here about what type of hurdle is best. I admit the physics behind all the explanations are a bit above my ability to fully understand. That being said I have a specific question. My daughter learned a power hurdle and tumbling first, when she learned running tumbling she...

This seems to go against common wisdom, but it does sort of make sense, and there are certainly several high-level tumblers that do this (Diego Hypolito is the first that jumps to my mind).
Thoughts?
What do other coaches see as an ideal length for the hurdle for vault.
What would be a good distance for the hurdle from the point of leaving floor to hitting the board, or to the start of the beatboard if this is easier to measure.
I would think that the distance might change depending on...
I have been having some issues with the arm action of some of my girls as they hurdle onto beatboard when vaulting. Some are quite stiff and not fluent but mostly they lacking enough upward punch/lift. Could others please describe what they think is an efficient powerful arm action and drills...
Clarification: For Front Salto Tumbling (not fronthandspring)
I'm a bit old school and trying to keep up with the times. So I need some edu-ma-cation, clarification here. Again, couldn't find anything definitive in any previous posts about this so posting a new thread.
I've been to a few...
In view of the fact that the hurdle is such an important part of tumbling I was hoping someone could clarify the key coaching points and common errors in the hurdle for tumbling (and any good drills). For example positions of the arms, legs etc.
Thanks in advance.

Some of the girls in my group are just starting to work on vault and I am having a devil of a time. They seem to get the concept, but it seems that no matter what drills I have them do they just don't get it.
The first problem is their lack of arm circle. The just run right up onto the board...
I was watching a video linked in the parents forum (Watch this kid!) and then went on to watch some of the other videos of the same girl. There were a couple of training videos and I was wondering about a vault set up they had.
