No...not my dd. I had understood that there is no nationals for level 4...that you truly weren't even competing until level 5, that there were no regionals OR nationals, for that matter until level 8. However, I met a mom at a meet today who assured me her dd was last years national champion for level 4 usag....

did I miss something? I was hoping someone could explain it to me...

I have never heard of a national level 4. My dd just finished 4 in December and went to states but nothing after that, at least in in USA.

Oh, I see. Both of my DD's never competed level 4. But very ironically a you tube friend posted her DD's National Gymnastics Challenge meet video today. Maybe that is what the mom meant by 'National' Champion?

AAU hosts nationals for all levels of AAU. Anyone can go, there is no qualifying meet, just had to have competed and met the state score requirement. It was a bragging point for someone new to our gym once, that they went to Nationals in compulsories.

I was wondering what the heck you could have been talking about... I always felt funny even saying that my "DD took 1st all-around at level 4 states" because to someone who wasn't familiar with how it works, it sounds like my DD was better than every other level 4 gymnast in the state (which she most certainly wasn't). I always felt like I needed to explain that there were two locations for states, and that each location had many sessions, and that each session had many age groups, so actually, my DD came in first out of the girls in her age group out of the girls at her session (and she lucked out and didn't have any of the "high powered" teams in her session) out of the girls at her location. But I guess some moms would feel no such sompunction to make sure it's clear exactly what it was that her daughter won...

This had me giggling! I thought, if there was a "nationals" for USAG compulsories, it must be the best kept secret around. One of the moms at the gym told me that up until a few years ago, going on to regionals from state was only for level 8 and above. They only recently included level 7's to go (at least in our region). IIRC, only level 10's can go further than regionals (junior nationals, I think?).

My understanding is just a few regions are now holding regionals for L7. For most L7s, the season still ends after states.

And level 9 can go further than regionals. Top 6 in each age group go to Eastern or Western Nationals.

I was sooo wondering when you guys were going to catch on!! lol...seriously, though, we were at dd's last meet of the season (and, by the way, her last level 4 meet...on to level 5! she is sooo excited to be shut of that middle circle!!) and this woman bragged to me that her dd was the national usag level 4 champ...I thought I heard her wrong, and told her that there wasn't a level 4 national meet, and that she must have meant states. She just about tore me apart insisting that there was, and that her dd had won states, too. So, I just said excuse me, and my mistake, and congrats to her dd! I mean, really, the girl was sitting right there with her...

but then I just had to share with y'all as soon as I got home...

ROFL - I hadn't replied because I didn't want to assume that I knew something (even though I was reasonably sure there was no such thing) but since my daughter is only a level 5, I haven't been round all THAT long. LOL

Well congrats to the Level 4 champ - with parents like that - it is going to be a long haul for her!!

Just saw an article on the usa-gymnastics.org website talking about a National Compulsory meet. I don't know if this is the first year it's been done, but there is a chance this mom's daughter competed at something like this.

while that meet looks very fun, it's still not something you have to "qualify" for to attend. dunno is right...just another meet, although a big expensive one, I'm sure. No, this lady said it was held in California. Now, just between us, I think they just went to an out of state meet. Our kids go to out of state meets, too (my son went to one in Vegas) but, it wasn't any bigger of a deal that the rest of the meets they went to in our own State-in fact, there were more teams at that meet from AZ than NV!!

Again, the whole thing that was funny about this was just how insistent she was. Great...and my dd will probably have to compete against her dd this fall in level 5...(oh, brother!)...hey, I wonder where the level 5 nationals are going to be held...tee hee hee...

The lady probably was having delusions of grandeur, just trying to give her the benefit of the doubt since I saw that post this morning. I can't imagine travelling from the West Coast to Florida for compulsory gymnastics even if my child was a superstar (which she isn't).
