Hello, my name's Elizabeth!

I'm excited to see a forum for Adult Gymnasts, I actually didn't know such a thing exists! I discovered the forum on accident, Google searching Age requirements for gymnasts.

Anyway, I am 20, soon to be 21 in November, and wondering what exactly someone my age can do in this sport? I've always been under the impression this is something for youth/teen athletes almost exclusively. Granted, I don't want to be in the Olympics or anything, but I'd like to be able to compete somewhere.

I took gymnastics until was 10 and then turned to figure skating. I was very serious about it for years, and only recently with university have I gotten out of my athletic shape. (Can't even remember the last time I exercised, yikes!) So I would love to get back into gymnastics, and am looking for some tips and advice to see if that's possible.

TIA for info and greetings. :)

You are not too old! There are actually quite a few adult gymnastics programs out there. What you're going to have to do is do a quick google search and call around to club gyms in the area. I would hope that at least one gym around you offers an 18+ class that meets once or twice a week. I have never participated in an adult class myself, but the gym I used to compete at had one and I would watch them practice every now and then. It was pretty low-key, but a great way for the gymnasts to have access to the equipment and a coach that could make corrections. Really, I think it was just about the participants getting back into shape by building a pretty basic gymnastics foundation. There was, of course, no competition, but it seemed like everyone was enjoying being able to be in the gym regardless. I'm sure many of them were former gymnasts like yourself getting a few of their old skills back. Good luck getting back into it! I hope you find something that works for you! Let us know :)

It's great to see another adult gymnast! You're still only young - I took up gym last year at the age of 43 (30 years after doing a little rec gym as a kid). Someone recently posted a video of a lady doing gym at age 75! Depending on where you are, there may be competitions.

i was a competive novice figure skater and now that my daughter is in gymnastics, i am loving the sport even more.. no more early am practices.. and i want to do a floor routine and beam routine with much grace, and different requierements.. skating and gymnastics are very similiar in some parts..

I'm 21 and just started gymnastics a few months ago! I love my adult gymnastics program. I had been a serious ballet dancer all through my childhood, but also got out of shape somewhat with college life. Gymnastics has helped me build my strength back up and regain a lot of lost flexibility. I look forward to hearing how it's going for you!

You are definatley not to old to get into it! You may be too old to do compete, but not to old to learn skills. I know that my gym offers an adult gymnastics class.
