I just found out last week that the boys' coach is not going to coach the lower levels (4's and 5's). He is going to hand over the boys in those levels to a truly incompetent coach and I fear for my children's safety. This coach has put my children at risk of getting hurt every time he has been put in charge of them, and he treats my littlest team son (he's 40 lbs) like he is a 13 year old ("Lift the 15 lb weights over your head" or "Get on the high bar at the same time as the two 13 year olds and pull up, pull over" with the bar shaking violently and the coach nowhere near them). I am scared my children will get hurt with this guy. He appears flaky and seems to have severe ADHD, he's super startling loud, and he's on his phone a lot.

The owner loves him for some reason. She really only cares about the girls team anyway, even though the boys team is bigger and is gaining more notice, bringing in more people, etc. I have a meeting with her tomorrow to talk to her about the situation, but she was very annoyed at me for even setting up the meeting. She wanted to just get it over with over the phone. She hired an awesome guy for the girls team, and they have 3 coaches for their team which is smaller than the boys team. She hasn't put out the effort to find a decent boys team coach to help out the boys team coach, and the head boys team coach feels like he has too many boys to do it all himself (understandable). However, he is adding SIX more boys to the team in level 4 in a week. I don't get it. He doesn't have enough of him to go around, so he adds 6 more boys plus gives the lower levels to one of the worst coaches around? What can I say to the gym owner? I feel powerless.

That really stinks. Last year we were at a gym that did not prioritize the boys at.all. This year we are at a gym where the head coach is one of the boys coaches and really the thing that distinguishes the gym from the many other gyms in our area is the boys team. The girls still get plenty of attention (I have 2 girls on team too); but it is so refreshing for the boys to not be basically an afterthought!!

Dunno, I know. To be fair, the head coach is an awesome coach as far as technique. I hate that he keeps throwing wrenches into my boys' training though. First they were going to be cut down hours for level 5, then they were adding hours and a crappy coach. UGH.

We're in the country and lucky to have anything. However, there is a gym 1.5 hours away that is really good. That is such a huge commitment though!

Man, that is tough. we were at gym similar to that when D was little (5 yo). His coach was forced out and he had a 15 year old level 10 coaching him. It was hard. We did leave, but it sounds like we had a few more options than you do. If you don't feel safe, then that is huge to me. Also, the on the phone stuff is wrong!!! He should not be on his phone during workout.

no advice, just commiserating. Let us know how the meeting goes tomorrow.
