Our stated policy is that gymnasts are expected to be at practice... but that life happens and HC is aware. If you are not prepared, you will not compete.

That being said, my gymmies (starting last season) had to be home by 8pm... and practice time had changed during the season before so that it ended at 8pm... so we were leaving a 1/2 hour early every day. Then the grandparents also decided OG could only attend practice 2 days a week... so she missed 3.5 hours of the 7.5 hours team practiced.

This season, our HC is also coaching the local Middle School team... their practice starts an hour earlier. I got permission to bring my gymmies in at the earlier time and we leave at 7pm (usually our team takes a munchie break then anyways). YG is getting her 7.5 hours a week (and sometimes slightly more) ... and is actually making progress! AND we are still usually home by 730 :)

Clearly there must have been issues at your gym with kids missing way too much. I can understand a policy of not being able to compete if the gymnast misses a lot of practice in the week prior to the meet--just not safe. Our gym has (had) an attendance policy in their handbook, but I don't know if they ever enforced it.
