Hi, my 12 year old daughter would really like to get her back handspring. She has been working on it since July, and is in level 3. There were a handful of girls who needed a spot for their round off back HS back in September, but she is now the only one who needs a spot. She is fast and strong and can do the other level 3 skills as well as a back walkover (not a pretty one). She is not flexible, so I believe that is what is holding her back. I do think if she can do her back walkover, she should be able to get a back handspring? One class in December she actually did get the round off BHS with no spot but hasn't been able to get it since. We have recently been stretching shoulders at home hoping that will help. Are there some people that physically can't move in that way very well? I'm wondering if she should keep trying or call it quits!
Thanks for any help!

What my coach did for me (with a spot) was we would a RO- three second pause BHS, then a RO - two second pause BHS, then a RO one second pause, a RO half a second pause and then after that connected it. She can also try doing the on tumble track and maybe on trampoline until she's able to do it on the floor

what my coach did was after he felt I had the shape right, he spotted me less and less until he wasn't doing anything and he told me to just try it with him standing there but didn't have to do anything and now I have it. I think that really helped me, just knowing that I can do it and its all in my head, but her coach would know what's best for her. And if she has he back walkover then no she should not have her back handspring just because of that, they are very similar skills but completely different lol. She will get it sooner than you think don't worry ;).
