I enjoy doing standing front tucks with that style of set. I'm not sure I would teach them out of a punch, though. It may be a good thing to dabble in just to break the monotony, and to see if it works better for certain kids than others. Standing fronts are hard. It helps that there are two different sets to choose from.
 
Russian front flip:

russian lift arms stay straight go down in front and lift up behind the body vs regular "ear bender" where arms bend from ears upward above/in front of the body.
I find it easier to get height with russian lifts. With regular gymnast tend to throw their arms to the ground instead of up.
 
not since the 4 inch spring floor. rotation and linear force is the key to good tumbling. whipping and traveling, etc;

Russian lift sends you up. very difficult to rotate and travel linearly with this technique.
 
Russian lift and Yankee lift were fun to mess around with but I had better results from the overhead arm set. And..... how the heck would you twist a Russian front without it going total barani or really late twist.

Hmmm..... Maybe a new Frankentwisting front something.
 
I ussd that technique when I was a gymnast. But honestly, none of our kids tumble out of front tuck step outs So it's not really going to translate to anything else, I would not spend any time on it myself. Setting upward in front is going to be more beneficial to vault and combination front tumbling (and as mentioned Twisting) as opposed to the Russian lift. But if you are at a loss with a kid and it's working for them then go for it.
