Ugh. D went to a sleepover at his friend's house tonight for the friend's birthday party. I was talking to the mom tonight and she said they were thinking about going to the new trampoline park in our town (:( ). I told her that I woudl prefer that D not go there tomorrow since it was 4 days before state, and then told her about some of the injuries that have already occurred there.

Of course, the parents looked at me like I was crazy. I left feeling like a neurotic, overprotective, crazy gym mom. This on top of the fact that I wouldn't let him go to a snowboard freestyle lesson (jumps, flips and tricks on snowboard) with another friend (who is his gymnastics teammate). UGH. Parents must think I am totally overprotective. Luckily, D realized the freestyle day wasn't a good idea too, so at least I am not the bad guy there.

Thought someone here might understand I wouldn't feel quite so crazy :(

4 days before state, the risk is so not worth it. If your are crazy then so am I!

When a trampoline park opened in our town, it only took a few weeks until one of the best level 10s around broke an ankle. After word of that got around, many of the local coaches told their gymnasts they weren't allowed to go there.

I don't know if we have trampoline parks in the UK, but I recently witnessed an accident on a trampoline at the gym, this poor child broke an arm while doing something they were not supposed to unless being taught by a qualified coach. I completely understand your fears, especially boys going on trampolines, boys seem to have no fear, especially around their mates.

I don't know if we have trampoline parks in the UK.

Yes we do, stumpy;

Although, oddly enough, that one is now closed, they say temporarily. They do say their injury rate is "industry norm"

There are more opened/opening. This is what the owners of a potential one in London say...

the new indoor trampoline park will offer 2150 square metres and a 125-person capacity of safety-padded, interconnecting trampolines for non-stop freestyle trampoline workouts and play. Air bag pits, football and rope swings will be available, as well as a number of fitness classes.

Popular in the US but a relatively new concept in the UK, the trampoline park will be accessible for everyone offering group events, sports training and children's birthday party bookings.

The trampoline provides significant cardiovascular benefits and enhances skills such as agility and balance, burning up to 1000 calories in just one hour. As a low-impact workout, it also absorbs significant shock when exercising so is much easier on joints so well suited for people recovering from injuries.
.

They've obviously done their research- not.

That is terrifying, especially the bits about moving people with neck and back injuries. It is as if people don't believe that moving these people can turn a recoverable injury into a paralyzing one, but this is a real possibility and ignoring it is frankly unforgivable.

There are several in the UK. We already had a girl injured from our gym at one. You are so not crazy.

Entirely sane. I wouldn't let mine, even without the comp.

They are popping up all over the uk.

You're not crazy! I didn't let DS go sledding the day before States. I think his dad thought I was a bit nuts, but he tends to crash the sled often and it just didn't seem worth risking a whole season of hard work.

You are not crazy. My girls went to one all together a couple days before a meet......thankfully no on was hurt but I did tell them and the parents to keep the away from there before meets. I understand they are going to do as they please, but at least I have at least cautioned them once. Here I was thinking I'm a crazy gym coach :).

My DD knows that the trampoline park is off limits during the entire competition season. So, no, you are not crazy. State is in four weeks, and she is already planning when she can go jump.

if all of you only knew what i know...these trampoline parks all are owned by snake oil salespeople. these DeathParks are wreaking havoc all over the world. these owners only care about money. nothing else. don't be hoodwinked and stick to your guns as parents. the life you save may be your own child's.

Thanks @dunno. I can use those with parents who keep insisting I am the crazy one. It has been open for about 6 months, and I know about 3 broken ankles, 2 torn acls and one guy who tore a tendon in his ankle. And I am sure I don' tknow them all..

of course, after all that, he got hurt at gym last night. Hoping it was just a shock and he is ok when he wakes up.....

You are not crazy. Those places are scary! I tend to think they are even more dangerous than backyard trampolines, because you have no control over the number of people jumping. Even so, we know a young boy who just suffered a bad break to his femur when his much older (and larger) brother fell on him while jumping on a trampoline at home.

I dislike them also. I wish the coaches said they were off limits. I don't mind if he plays in them when they are almost empty.

My kids recently went to a team mate's birthday party at one. My older son hurt his back and he is still sore a week later. We are skipping them from now on. We are planning a party at a rock climbing facility though. Where they wear harnesses. I have no idea of the injury rate at those places.

Thanks for all the links @dunno -I'm going to start sending them to fiends who wonder why I won't go (or send my kids) to the trampoline parks around here. Just as an aside, the video you posted about the girl going through a window is near me and it's actually not a trampoline park-it's a gymnastics school (and it's the second time they had a problem-they were told when they were inspected last to move the trampolines away from the windows and never did!)
