So basically I’m a level 6 gymnast and I have all my skills except for a flyaway on bars. I had my layout with a spot a month ago, but lost it. Now I can’t even do it with a spot into the pit. I train on FIG bar setting because the JO setting is the farthest and highest the bars go am I am more scared of using that setting instead of FIG. I am 4.11 and occasionally when I do cast push aways I slam my feet on the low bar. It is really painful and causes me to bail. This has caused me to be really catious of the low bar and it slows down my flyaway and causes me to pike instead of staying layed out so I don’t kick the highbar. One day I scraped the high bar and now I am really scared. Me and my coach have tried a lot of drills and I can’t seem to get it back. We have tried candlesticks into the pit, candlestick and he flips me, candlestick on to a slanted mat, etc. I am also having a hard time about knowing when to let go. Any suggestions or tips?
 
Make sure to stay hollow in the back of your tap swings or your push away. Also, you should let go right when you see your feet. Hope this helps and I hope you get your flyaway!
 
Keep working your coach's drills.
Try to picture doing a perfect flyaway.
See if your coach can say "now" just before you should release. We do this onto a vault stack under the high bar. No flipping ... just letting go.
After a few times, you should start to feel the difference between when to let go and too early/too late. Once you can do the drill (and let go on your own), you can start combining it with other drills to get the actual flipping of the flyaway.
 
What I tell my athletes is that hitting your toes is to show you your mistakes, its not supposed to scare you. Try to think of all the times you did a flyaway successfully and then the select few times where you hit your feet. What did you do differently on those turns? The worst thing to do in any dismount on bars is to slow it down so make sure you are putting yourself in the right mindset to go for it fully! Good luck and I hope you get it back soon!!

Drilling is always important, glad the coach is doing that with you. The timing of the fly away is at the end of the tap swing.

Now my only question is, due to you scraping the bar are you more scared or are you really not understanding the skill.

This is the main issue, if you have great drills and understanding of the skill there "should" be no issue. However, even if you do have great drills and understanding doesn't mean you are capable of doing it sometimes your body is telling you something.

When I was learning my tkachev on high bar, it took me a lot longer than most people to get it and my drills were amazing. When it came time for me to do it on the actual bar, I couldn't let go for the longest time. For me it wasn't the understanding (mentally) or the drills, it was the fact my body just didn't seem to have the general grasp of things. My coach and I knew we were both ready, but it took a year for me to do it.

So don't rush it or anything it takes time.
