every single person at my gym has grips over 1-2 or even 3 years of use but I keep seeing people saying they change theirs after a couple months. when should I get new ones?

It truly depends. Things like level, amount of time on bars, and weight all effect that answer. If the grips feel slippery on the bar or start to tear anywhere then get new grips immediately. Other than that I personally recommend getting new grips every year. Sometimes you can get away with 2, but by that point you should notice a big difference when you get new grips.

I do think a lot depends on the level/skills being trained. My daughters first couple of pairs (she started wearing them in level 4 I think) lasted years. I mean I think went through 2 pairs total for levels 4-8. But once she started working releases and other level 9/10 bar skills, she switched to a different style and brand. Now we are lucky if they last 3 months.
