Hi! I'm Mom of a newish 9 year old gymnast, and a complete newbie to the gymnastics world myself! She started classes last summer and has been on the PreTeam since her first month of practice. She is completely obsessed with the sport, so this forum has been a fantastic resource for me to learn about this world we are entering. Since she just got official word that she was invited to join the team, I figured it was time to stop lurking and join the club!

She has been training current level 4 skills and is learning so fast - I feel bad I didn't get her into the sport earlier! She will be competing new level 3 or possibly 4 next year, depending on how quick she keeps picking up new skills. (Quick brag - she just got her cartwheel on the beam last night at Open Gym!)

Looking forward to continuing to learn a lot here! :)

Welcome! My dd started gymnastics at age 9 too, competed L4 at age 10 and L5 at age 11. She'll be (most likely) doing the "new 5" next year. It's been wonderful for her, though we also wish we'd started her a little bit younger. This site is a great help in figuring everything out - welcome!

Thanks for the welcome - It's nice to meet parents of "older" gymnasts....it's so bizarre to me that kids starting a sport at 9 can be considered "late starters!" The nice thing is that our gym is pretty new, so most of the team and pre-team girls are my daughter's age. (All our girls will be new Level 3-4, the gym is that new!). It helps that she's not the only 9 year old amongst a group of 6 year olds. I think that will help her focus on her own progress and personal goals, rather than comparing herself to younger girls. I'm so glad I found this site - I've learned so much here already! It looks like this sport can be quite a roller coaster, but I can tell this forum community will help keep the ride fun!
