How long is a beam?

For Christmas, I am asking my parents for a floor beam. I already have a low beam, but it isn't as long as a real beam is. I want a floor beam so I can work on upper level skills . But I see beams in all these magazines/internet that are 8, 9, or 12 feet long. So my question is...how long is a beam?

actually, it is 47 1/4 from the top of the beam to the cement floor at 120 cm.
