I'm really not a very huggy-type person, but I could definitely use a hug. My youngest daughter who was all ready for level 8 started having wrist pain about a month ago. I brought her in to the ortho, and she has bilateral gymnast wrist with stress fractures in both wrists. They put a hard cast on one arm. I really was coping fine with that because it happens, and you stay positive, rest, let it heal, and try to persevere. Well, on Saturday, while playing a game at gym, another child kicked her, and she broke her big toe and also fractured where the toe meets the foot. I am sorry to report that I did not handle that so well. I cried a lot. She can't go to school because she can't even physically maneuver between the foot and wrists. I think after COVID and just everything else on this earth, it feels like A LOT. I think my poor kid is probably handling this better than I am! :(

Sending you a hug and positive vibes. We are here for you.

At this moment, life does sound quite overwhelming. A good cry can be very therapeutic; glad to hear you could let it out.
You are strong. You can make it through this.

Hoping you can also reach out to your other support systems as well.

There is nothing more frustrating and heartbreaking than those nonsport related injuries. My daughter sprained her ankle once playing this dumb mat game where they push each other off mats and the last one standing wins. I was so annoyed like who thought this was a good activity? I feel like we accept the risks that come along with doing the sport itself so when they get hurt in a non sport related way just playing it hits doubly hard.

Hope she heals quick!!

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I've had moments like this with my DD. Big hug to you and I hope your daughter heals quickly.

I'm so sorry. That must be so frustrating for you and her. I hope her healing is quick and her comeback is exceptional!

Hugs.

I’m sorry to hear the latest and even more frustrating it must be that it was non gymnastics practice related! I can’t imagine not being able to use either wrist and only one lower limb. Hugs to you and your daughter.

Well if this doesn't make for the worst 2020 ever! I am so sorry this happened and sending bountiful hugs your way! You've got this momma!

I am so, so sorry! We aren’t we bad off as you, obviously, but mine is going into week 3 in a cast for gymnast wrist, and will be non-weight bearing for THREE months after the cast is off. Plus, she needs an X-ray on the other wrist and I expect it’s the same. She actually quit gymnastics a couple months ago for dance and was doing SO well, so it’s been a bummer for sure. I hope yours heals quickly and can persevere!

Thanks for the good wishes. We had a good talk this afternoon. She’s worried about getting her skills back. She had a very bad arm injury several years ago on level 4 and made a great comeback, but level 8 is a different animal. @amiandjim I think half of our younger girls have gymnast wrist. I’m starting to wonder if it was too much pounding after quarantine?! Three months off is rough, and it is entirely possible my daughter will be off that long as well due to the widening at the growth plate. The foot thing happened two days after the wrist and cast, so it’s been an awful week. I think 2020 is cursed.

It might have been the quarantine for your gym, but to be honest, my kiddo had been complaining about mild wrist pain for over a year. She always said it was just “sore” and got better right away. However, the wrist specialist we saw said her growth plate was so wide that it had been going on for over a year for sure. She later told me that she didn’t tell us how bad it hurt because she didn’t want anyone to be mad at her. That really and truly hurt my heart. I was always super supportive, said the right things (at least I hope so!), and so did her coaches. That didn’t stop her from feeling pressure to keep it a secret.

I'm so sorry to hear that. That is really a lot to take. It sounds like you've got a pretty resilient kid there. Wishing her quick healing and another strong come back.

Ugh. Poor thing. 2020 really is the worst. Hope she is able to make a full recovery. Our girls spent the entire summer tumbling on the tumble track or a thin air track they put on the floor. My daughter has complained they never tumble on the floor except for basics, but I’m super thankful they are protecting their joints.

It's interesting. Regarding the "gymnast wrist," the ortho we saw who has worked with several local gyms and the nearby college team said that if he were to X-ray most young gymnasts between 9-12 years old doing optional level skills and especially the yurchenko he would expect to see micro fractures or stress in all of their wrists. This might be true! And then when you factor in taking off for several months due to COVID and going back to those skills, it's a lot of stress on their bodies! @amiandjim Don't feel bad. My daughter didn't say a word either. These kids do not like being sidelined! Her coaches saw her turning her back to shake her wrists out after tumbling and vaulting. She was trying to hide it too!

Very sorry to hear. I hope she has a speedy recover.

JMO all gymnasts should be in Tiger Paws. After a hateful spring between L4 and IGC silver (where BHS started on beam) dealing with wrist issues. She has been in Tiger Paws ever since.

Hindsight I would of got her in them sooner. I now think of them as supportive safety equipment much like pads in soccer, football and baseball.

I would like to be able credit who I heard it from but I don’t remember who said it..... but it went like this. If wrists were meant to take a pounding, we‘d walk on them not our feet.

It was a very eye opening sentence

I am so sorry about all she has been through. And I agree. This year needs to end.

Oh I absolutely agree about the wrist guards. I think we got them too late. And that’s what the ortho said too. Wrists and especially open growth plates are not meant to withstand all of this.

FYIY, mine did wear tiger paws as soon as she started training yurchenkos and bhs on beam, so around level 4. Didn’t make a difference for her.
