I’ve read so many posts from parents about their daughters retiring from gymnastics over the years and moving on always seemed so clear from the outside, but here I am questioning things. DD was all in for so many years and was trying for college gymnastics right up to the start of the school year. She realized that none of the D2/3 schools were going to be a good fit for her and gave up that pursuit. Great- no problem as it opens until many other college options. But now she’s so checked out mentally and even hurts. All of the nagging injuries that she used to push through just weigh her down now. Do I encounter her to finishing up l10 no matter what or let her walk away this late in the game??

I would encourage her to let it go. I tried to finish my senior year just to do it and I lasted until January and then quit for real. I should have let it go months earlier. I focused on spring track season and pole vaulting and ended up running cross country and track at a division three school and had an amazing time.

I am all about finish what you start but not in this case. Try new activities. Pick up a no-cut school sport (if you’re in a state where swim and dive is a winter sport, practices start now! Try dive!).

Work on college applications. Pick up an elective second semester. Get an after school or weekend job. Take a dance class. Go on a road trip to visit colleges.

This isn’t going to show on a college application, so right now she should be doing it just for the joy of the sport and the social part.
