If your gym requires a certain score(s) to advance to the next level would you mind shading? I am trying to gauge what is typical these days, understanding different gym philosophies play a big role here…
Thanks!

35 or 36 depending on the level. Move up scores are much less important than skills though. We went soft on skills for a few years... we have been making it more strict again... no skill... no move up.

Definitely more skills based than scores, but most of the people who move up get around a 34+

This year as a platinum, out of the three meets I have competed, I only broke a 33 one meet and got 32's at the other two, but I was told by the head coach that I am only two skills away to move up to diamond next season

We've been at 2 gyms. One had a minimum mobility score that had to be reached at 2 meets and required 80% of skills for the next level. The other required absolute perfection of all needed skills before moving up and many repeated levels. The first gym was a much more fun gym to train at but scores were not always the highest. The 2nd gym wins everything. So I think it depends what you're looking for overall.

That’s what I would expect! More fun at the gym without the intense mobility requirement. What was the min mobility score at the second gym?

Our gym has always been a skill based move up gym and as such we are not the most competitive but our girls do well for the most part. Now they’re instituting a move up score policy that seems so unattainable for most gymnasts, basically guaranteeing every level will need to be repeated (even the low levels) and I’m worried it will leave kids so frustrated and bored.

There was not a mobility score requirement at the 2nd gym because high 37's/38's and 39's were common. That is why the team won literally every team competition at every level at every meet. But - my daughter was bored with the constant constant perfection required. It was like being stuck in compulsory purgatory even after compulsory.

I wish we could find a blend but I am not having much luck where we live (large metro area) - fast paced coaching that still focuses on form. It makes me wonder if this is just normal, that you get one or the other?

I feel the same way! Our gym has always been more focused on progressing the girls and advancing their skills- having them compete far above minimum level skills etc, but I understand wanting to find somewhere in the middle in respect to scores/form vs skill progression. It truly may be one or the other.

Not coaching currently, but I always required all major skills for next level (not necessarily “the hardest” or “goal” skills for each level, but able to safely meet requirements) and having scored a 9.00+ *(ish) on each event. I was less worried about level 4-5 and level 6-7 vault considering they would be spending another season on the same vault.

USAG Minimum move-up scores PLUS 80% of the skills for the next level.
For a while, we also had "Maximum Mandate" scores that REQUIRED you to move up the next season no matter what, but that was detrimental when we got to Y Nationals and there were gyms that didn't have the mandate score requirements our state did.
Here are our old Mandate Scores (and you will see why it could be a problem):
L3 - score at least a 33.0 with 8.25 on EACH EVENT in that meet - 2x in the season.
L4 - score at least a 34.0 with 8.00 on EACH EVENT in that meet - 2x in the season.
L5 - score at least a 33.0 with 7.75 on EACH EVENT in that meet - 2x in the season.
L6 - L8 - score at least a 34.0 with 8.00 on EACH EVENT in that meet - 2x in the season.
XG - score at least a 34.0 with 8.00 on EACH EVENT in that meet - 2x in the season.

No mobility score, but anything under consistent 36s makes you vulnerable to repeating or being asked to move to xcel.

To move into the training group for the next level at the end of the season, you have to have most of the next-season skills. Then they all of the skills for the next level by the end of the summer before the comp season, plus about half the skills for the next 1-2 levels or the building blocks of them, depending on the level.

It results in repeats since some girls aren’t training up after their season, and plenty of girls get the skills they need in September or October but by then it’s considered too late. The exception is for injuries, which seem to earn girls the benefit of the doubt, so there have been situations where girls have probably rehabbed injuries longer than needed to bypass the August skill deadline.

The other exception is athletes who are in the daytime/fast-tracked program. They can acquire skills up to the day of the first meet if needed. I guess that builds in room to test out and skip levels, but when those girls are slow to acquire skills before meet season it creates messy optics and hard feelings.
