Women Olympic Trials

How do they determine who competes in the Olympic trials? Does the P&G championship determine this? I am just curious about the process.

Yes, next year's P&G championships will determine who is invited to the Olympic Trials. Usually it is the top (8? 12?) AA competitors, plus a number of event specialists who perform well enough for Marta to want to consider them.

I don't know if there is the ability to petition to trials if you can't compete at Nationals for some reason.. maybe?

I am incredibly ignorant but it was my understanding that essentially the team beyond the first place finisher at the trials was decided in a back room. Am I totally off base?

No, you're right. I think first and second(not sure about this) place are on the team and the rest are decided by Marta.

In 2012 I think only first place at trials was guaranteed a spot. Not sure if that's the same for 2016.

With only four on the 2016 team, I doubt more than first place at trials is an auto bid. Still can't believe only four will go.
