I have a question about the whole Jordan Chiles floor score change controversy. As I understand it, she was originally not given credit for the leap skill but then after the challenge she was and so her difficulty score and overall score was raised by 1/10th. But why were there no execution deductions taken from her E score given that she did not do the skill very well? Were the execution deductions already taken on that skill even though they didn’t count the skill? I just thought her E score would have changed as well but it looks like it didn’t.

E scores and D scores are calculated separately by different judges.

E score judges just deduct what they see, without worrying too much about whether a borderline element was actually hit or just attempted. So it definitely is possible to get an element deducted not credited but still deducted. But usually the deduction is appropriate anyway - a poor split in a gogean is a poor split if it is downgraded to a split leap full, for example. Or a deduction for precision because something is slightly under rotated becomes a deduction for precision for a different element somewhat over rotated.

The D judges have to decide what elements to credit. They also apply the neutral deductions apparently.

E scores can’t be queried, only D scores.

When there is a query, the judges don’t get a second go. It goes straight to the jury instead.

Thank you very much for the detailed response! That is interesting very helpful. I had originally thought that both the D and E scores would have been reassessed. Just from what I know of the code of points the deductions seem particular to the skill so it would be hard to score if you are unsure what skill the gymnast is attempting. But I guess like you say, skills in the same family like leaps would have similar deductions for split angle less than 180 degrees etc.
