So my next (much smaller) worry is how we’ll keep competitive gymnasts in shape if they’re out of the gym for weeks. My daughters are both optional level.. Maybe a home workout plan?

Up to 19 now, with one being a teenager
Right. Our gyms are open, but the schools are closed for at least four weeks. This includes pretty rural areas. I thought those areas would hold out closing schools for as long as possible.

They will likely be forced to close. Spain and France just did this.

And maybe the US will also do the smart thing and provide assistance and support to small businesses and individual workers affected by HAAAAAAHAHAHAHA I almost made it through that sentence with a straight face but couldn't quite manage it

We're in a hot spot and almost all of the schools and all of the local gyms are closed. Our gym remains open. I really love our gym and the coaches, but for the first time I find myself questioning if they value gymnastics more than the gymnasts. I know this is hard for small business owners, but it's also hard for parents who feel like we'll be penalized if we keep our kids home when the gym is open. And I know the same parents who have their kids in non-stop privates are trying to schedule more now that schools are closed. It's really made me think about the role gymnastics plays in our lives.

How many gyms are still open? Ours is open..I’m still coaching and the kids have practice. Weird since I’m working from home for my other job and the kids are out of school. Several gyms in our state are now closed though.
As of last practice, our YMCA hasn't cancelled any classes, so we still have gym (could change at any point though). The "bright side" of our District Meet being cancelled for this weekend is that on Thursday, more than half the team girls took the day off - some were sick with REGULAR stuff and some figured that they don't have a meet to prepare for, so it is safer to stay home / there are better things to do / or something else. The only ones that will be consistently there in the next month would be those that are going to YMCA Nationals, and even for those girls, they may not come every practice.

I haven’t heard of many gym closures in CA. Our gym is open and a big gym but they are staggering all the groups to keep under certain numbers. My guess is that if regionals is canceled they will reduce hours.

I can't believe that CA gyms are not closed. Basically everything is closed other than grocery stores and restaurants and we are at 63 cases.

I expect everything to close nation wide by wednesday.

The responsible thing would be for everything to close right now other than survival essentials. And as much as I love gymnastics, it is not a survival essential by any stretch of the imagination

I saw this in the Philadelphia Inquirer this morning. I am not in Pennsylvania. I am in another state and our gym is still open but this says to me that most states will move this direction in the next week. It's terrible and I feel for our gym owner as they are trying to stay open but I expect that they will be forced to close for a period of time.

Pennsylvania officials urged most businesses in Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks, and Chester Counties to shut down now. If they didn’t, officials warned, the governor or state’s secretary of health could make them by invoking a law intended to protect public health.

Wolf’s list pares down life in those counties to bare essentials, voiding most excuses to leave the house aside from getting groceries, buying medication, and visiting a doctor. The list of nonessential businesses included gyms, hair and nail salons, retail, casinos, bars, community centers, golf courses, shopping malls, and even state liquor stores. Restaurants, Wolf noted, should stay open only for carry-out and delivery. Medical marijuana dispensaries can remain open.

The house just passed a bill for this with bipartisan support and it is looking like the senate will pass it as well - Link Removed

Is this the whole state? Colorado just shut down ski resorts today. I’m guessing they’ll go to this by Tuesday.

Admin hat on.

It is difficult to discuss this without politics. It’s also difficult to have a conversation about anything without the virus being a part of it.

Please try to keep politics off the CB. I have my own personal opinions about what the government should and should not do. We have discussed this thread and are giving as much leeway here as possible.

Lets try to keep the focus on what gyms are doing to deal with it. Who’s closed. What gyms are doing to help the staff and gymnasts.

For those whose gyms are closed what are your athletes doing to keep in shape? Are they making you work out with them? Is your gym limiting rec classes and staggering groups? Do you have a tiny gym that is functioning as usual? What are your families doing to support each other and the coaches? Feel free to start a thread about any of these. Just keep topics as positive as possible.

Admin hat off.

Have a great week everyone! Stay safe and stock up on wine, ice cream and any comfort foods that work best for you.

We just got an email that DD's gym is staggering workouts, parents please don't stay. It looks like they've also built in cleaning time in between. Please bring enough water not to need the water fountain. Two days a week this results in a very tiny group for DD, but the other two days have a pretty normal person load (the last hour of practice on Saturdays has 50 girls). Our carpool family has two members with risk factors, so they may only go the two lighter days. We may follow suit. We'll see how many people are still coming.

DD said she doesn't like the idea of going two days a week; it makes her feel like a Bronze. Sorry sister. At this point you're lucky you have gym at all.

We're working on assembling at-home workouts. some of these will be coached via livestream; others may just be text or prerecorded videos. We're still figuring it out.

DD's gym has cancelled any open gyms but as far as I know, is still having classes and team practices (as of yesterday). All schools have been cancelled for 3 weeks, so we will see if or how the gym schedule changes over the next few days.

Coachp shared a workout on another thread that I printed off for my girls. My dancer (DD18) and my exchange student runner (15) are excited to do some good workouts here at home. The dancer's studio is going to have classes via internet that should be coming out tomorrow. It won't be as good as being in the studio, but it's much better than trying to do it on her own.
