Hey, I’m a first year gold and we do 2 3hr sessions a week. I feel like this isn’t a normal amount of time and it seems most girls my level are training much more. Some 2nd year golds do 3 3hrs but I’m scared to ask my coaches if this is even available for first years. I’d love to hear you input on weather or not 6hrs a week is enough. Thanks!

I worked at a gym where golds only did 5 hours and it was fine. There was an option for a third day but only a handful wanted it. We were intentionally a low hours program and had athletes winning at every level.

Does your gym use Xcel in place of DP levels 2-5? Some gyms do so they do much higher hours.

What is your gym to coach ratio? It could be that your gym doesn't need that many hours because there is not a lot of waiting around for a turn.

How do the girls at your gym do at meets compared to the higher hours gyms?

As a silver in a mixed bronze/silver class, I trained 3 hours a week (2x 1.5 hour practices), and it was fine for the gymnasts.

Also, if you have consistently showed your coaches in practice that you want to improve and that you are coachable/take corrections, I bet they will be receptive to your request to do 3 3hrs. Even if they say no, they will respect your desire to get better and confidence to advocate for yourself.

6 hours is in the normal range but, if you want more hours, just ask! Worst case, they tell you “no” and also recognize that you are motivated.

I’m also a first year gold doing 3 hours twice a week. It seems perfect to me! Enough to get better, but have enough days off to do other stuff without constantly being sore. At my gym Silver/Gold is 6 hours a week and Platinum/Diamond is 9 hours a week. We have girls on the podium all the time and most of us make state

My daughters current gym does 12 hours for gold but they do gold instead of level 4/5 and do test outs for 4/5 after meet season and girl go straight to level 6.

Her old gym gold was 6 hours a week and then they offered platinum and diamond at 9 hours a week. Most would stay xcel.

So it really depends on the gym and the goals. My daughter did level 4 at last gym and was training for level 5 but was really bored with the same routines so we switched to new gym so she could do a year of gold and make her own routines and then move to level 6 since her old gym didn’t offer this option. Personally I’d ask your coaches and tell them your goals to see if you need more hours.
