WAG REC program

I was just wondering how the REC programs are run at most gyms. Does your gym have event coaching or does the same coach stay with one group. How are the girls split up? Is there certain curriculum for each "level" or group or do coaches come up with what is best for their group? And, how are kids moved up from rec to preterm or team? Interested to see how other gyms work!

At our gym rec is broken up into levels- preschool, beginner, intermediate, advanced, advanced 1 & 2... There is also a preteam, a teen and adult rec class, and girls 10+ rec classes. Classes range from 45 mins to 90 minutes each. On lower levels they usually have one coach for all events, but as you get to the advanced levels they usually have multiple coaches, for different events. There does seem to be a curriculum, and the lower levels stay structured on that, but the more advanced levels seem to have coaches tailoring to individual skill needs and levels. There are usually between 5-8 kids per rec class/coach. Kids get to team (our gym currently only competes USAIGC) via a tryout, preteam, or straight from rec. Kids do have to be invited to team, any way they get there.

At my dds gym, rec is done mostly by age, when you first sign up you sign up for with either a weekday class or a Saturday class, then if the coach of the group thinks they are too advanced, after the first session they sign up for they can go to advanced rec,( pretty much work levels 2+,where as regular rec works level 1 mostly) once a year in the middle of May we do rec evaluations to make sure the kids are having fun, working , and progressing and during this you, the coaches evaluate whether they have the mental, and physical readiness to join competitive or pre team.

At our gym the rec program is divided by level and then by age. So there is a Level 1 a,b,c with each letter getting progressively older. We also have a Mom and tot and a preschool class. After levels one and two kids will usually progress to the pre-team classes. We have two levels of that Jr. and Sr. Kids are invited to team from either of those pre-team levels. The L1 and L2 classes are just one coach. The pre-team classes are two coaches.

We essentially have begining, intermediate, and advanced rec for ages 5-13. (Preschool is separate).
Kids are separated into levels by ability, regardless of age. There is an evaluation before you start the first class.
The coach stays with the group for the whole class.
The curriculum is the same within the level no matter the coach. There is a list of skills for each level that the girls are evaluated on every few weeks to determine who can move to the next level.
Moving to team is a mystery to me. It's not explained.

Preschool classes are 45 minutes to an hour. Then the first four levels of CanGym are an hour. Most advanced skills there are pullover, cartwheel and handstand on floor.
Then CanGym level 5 and up (working round offs, front handsprings, glide swings, swings, and up etc.) are 2 hours.

Every class starts with a warm up (45 min and 1 hour classes have 10 minute warm up, 2 hour classes have 25-30 minute warm up). Then they break off into groups for rotations and stay with the same coach the whole time. At the end of the session they get a progress report and a badge if they passed.

Moving to team is coach recommendation to a trial class in May, followed by a trial class and then they are either invited into a competitive program or stay in rec.

Our rec program offers mommy&me classes as well as toddler classes. "Real" rec classes begin at age 4 and it's gender separate. From there on it's skill based; beginner, intermediate, advanced and "expert". We have a set list of skills needed to move to each level. The coach stays with the class the entire time.
There are a few different paths to team. One can either try out for and do our TOPs program, gaining strength and form before working hard core on skills OR sometimes kids get recruited straight from the highest level rec classes. It is definitely preferred that the girls do TOPs before team but I would say this past year with us competing the new L3 we have had more older girls coming straight from rec than before.
