My son attended his level 5 state championship last weekend. There was an issue with the heat at the venue and it was about 50 degrees when the competition started. My son does not tolerate cold well and he had relatively disastrous performances on his first two events (PB and HB). He’s never experienced such a difficult start at a meet and it seemed like he might not meet his goal of being selected for the 6 member state team. Fortunately, he rallied like a boss, earning new personal-bests on Floor (9.5 🥇) and Rings (9.6 🥇), which moved him up to 3rd place overall in the state. I was super proud of how well he recovered from such a difficult start. The meet was an excellent learning experience for him. Also, I learned that I need to pack hand warmers in his meet bag!

We had one state meet like that, and it is miserable! Congrats to him for rallying and meeting that goal!!

My level 5 had a great state meet! He scored his highest AA of the season (52.2) even with a fall on mushroom, placed on three events, and got a season high 9.0 on PBars, which is pretty impressive, given he only competes one bonus on that event!

THREE of his teammates made the state team, which was pretty amazing, and his team is the Level 5d1 state champions, capping off their undefeated season.

Two weeks until regionals, and then post-season training, my favorite time of the year! He'll compete 5d1 again next year. This was always the plan no matter how he did, because he just turned 10 a few weeks ago, and we don't do level 6 at our gym.

I'm so proud of my little guy. It's been a rough year dealing with fear issues (see my post on fear of heights), many nights of tears, and many fewer placements than the past two years. He's still motivated and excited for the next two weeks, for summer, and for next year...of all the things I love about gymnastics, the lessons in perseverance, overcoming adversity, and being able to support teammates even if you are struggling are my favorites. These boys are going places in life.

Congratulations to your son!

Sounds like he has grown a lot this season! Cannot wait to see his progress next year!

My 4D2 has had an okay season. He’s been doing well, but not great, so it was a toss up if he’d qualify to regionals. Qualifying was his big goal for the season and he did just that!
He had a third place tie (4th place medal) on his favorite event and hit all his routines to the best of his ability, medaling in 5/6 events, and it turned out to be his best meet of the season.
Even though it was his best meet he just barely snuck in as a qualifier so I’m expecting his first regionals showing to be a potentially rough go knowing that his best is probably already near the bottom of the pack. He’s excited for the opportunity and it will be a great learning experience for him.
I’m so proud of how far he’s come this season, not only in his gymnastics but in his drive, work ethic, and maturity at practice.

Went decent. 2 level 9s placed first AA, some individual event placements here and there among the other levels.

The/good/bad news is that all the upper level guys made it to regionals; my favorite week every year is the first week after season ends, because that's when we forget about routines and just focus on skills, so that's delayed for at least a few more weeks (probably longer; I think all of them are likely to make nationals). But I suppose that's a good complaint to have.

Lower level guys were not quite as successful, but no major disasters. Level 3s were a handful, but that's to be expected.
