I know some had state meets this past weekend. How did they go? I love hearing how the boys are doing!

My son attended his level 5 state championship last weekend. There was an issue with the heat at the venue and it was about 50 degrees when the competition started. My son does not tolerate cold well and he had relatively disastrous performances on his first two events (PB and HB). He’s never experienced such a difficult start at a meet and it seemed like he might not meet his goal of being selected for the 6 member state team. Fortunately, he rallied like a boss, earning new personal-bests on Floor (9.5) and Rings (9.6
), which moved him up to 3rd place overall in the state. I was super proud of how well he recovered from such a difficult start. The meet was an excellent learning experience for him. Also, I learned that I need to pack hand warmers in his meet bag!

My level 5 had a great state meet! He scored his highest AA of the season (52.2) even with a fall on mushroom, placed on three events, and got a season high 9.0 on PBars, which is pretty impressive, given he only competes one bonus on that event!
THREE of his teammates made the state team, which was pretty amazing, and his team is the Level 5d1 state champions, capping off their undefeated season.
Two weeks until regionals, and then post-season training, my favorite time of the year! He'll compete 5d1 again next year. This was always the plan no matter how he did, because he just turned 10 a few weeks ago, and we don't do level 6 at our gym.
I'm so proud of my little guy. It's been a rough year dealing with fear issues (see my post on fear of heights), many nights of tears, and many fewer placements than the past two years. He's still motivated and excited for the next two weeks, for summer, and for next year...of all the things I love about gymnastics, the lessons in perseverance, overcoming adversity, and being able to support teammates even if you are struggling are my favorites. These boys are going places in life.
Good luck!My son has his State meet this weekend!
Good luck to him this weekend!! Can't wait to hear all about it!My son has his State meet this weekend!
Because we have YMCA Nationals toward the end of June (for those who qualified and choose to go), we are semi-delayed. However, since it is so far away, we will have one day each week that we work on routines for Nationals. The rest of the girls will continue working their skills in their clubs. Some of the DP 2-4 girls (who qualified but aren't attending) may start working next-level routines a little (once they have the skills), but we aren't teaching them to the DP 2-4 Nationals girls because we don't want any confusion. Our DP5 will be learning her L6 FLoor routine, but it will be different enough that she won't get confused.Went decent. 2 level 9s placed first AA, some individual event placements here and there among the other levels.
The good/bad news is that all the upper level guys made it to regionals; my favorite week every year is the first week after season ends, because that's when we forget about routines and just focus on skills, so that's delayed for at least a few more weeks (probably longer; I think all of them are likely to make nationals). But I suppose that's a good complaint to have.
Lower level guys were not quite as successful, but no major disasters. Level 3s were a handful, but that's to be expected.
