At my 5year old's first ever mock meet, I noticed that on rings, and high bar, he was the only one not able to do a hanging chin up and required the coach's assistance.

He's only been on team for 4 months, and did kinder 2 months before that, but I was wondering if there was anything we should work on at home to improve strength as I noticed other boys his age were able to do them.

Is this something that gets taught at the gym or the kid just has to know how to do one?

you don’t need to do anything; building strength is what practice is for. But I do recommend that all young gymnasts take swimming lessons. My son switched from competitive swimming to gymnastics at age 7 and he was able to progress very quickly because he was so strong and fit from swimming. Also, learning to swim is an essential life-skill and it can be challenging to schedule swim lessons around a competitive gymnastics schedule. Gymnastics has a tendency to take over your whole schedule very quickly, so do the swimming now while you still can!

We did swimming when he was in kinder but had to stop when he joined team for that very reason. will definitely implement that thank you!

My son took ages to bloom and he watched his peers overtake him. It was a little heartbreaking, tbh because he was working so hard. But then the testosterone hit and he went for it. He’s now Aussie L7, strong and kicking goals everywhere. Focus on basics development as a young MAG. They’re real stuff comes after puberty.

Agree with all of the above. And, since he is 5, I highly encourage you to have him try many different sports and activities. It will build strength, endurance, etc and cross training is really good for them. At 5, my son did wrestling, soccer, baseball, and basketball. He continued with soccer until he was about 10 (It has been a while so I don't remember exactly). Also, just every day play will help him develop strength!

Enjoy the ride! Hope he has a fun season!!
