I

Izzie

So, I'm trying to figure out what USAG level AND/OR USAIGC level I am. Being in a rec class at the moment, no one has really told me what it would be, all I know it probably lower then AA Level 4...
A general overview of the skills I have:

Floor:
Left Split Flat
Split Leap
Switch Leg Leap
Front Handspring
Back Walkover (w/ spot)
Round Off Rebound
Handstand Hold
& Most non-tumbling skill jumps and such

Uneven Bars:
Pullover (w/ light spot)
Back Hip Circle (w/ light spot)
Squat On
Flyaway (into pit)
-- Haven't tried anything else

Beam:
Cartwheel
Full Toe Turn
Scale
Round Off-Dismount
Straddle Jump
Tuck 3/4
-- And other basic jumps

Vault:
Tuck on
Jump to Handstand from springboard and then fall flat on stack of mats

I'm also training for level 4 (first competitive level in my gym), so any recommendations for how I can prepare at home as far as conditioning goes? I only get an hour and a half at the gym a week, and NO conditioning at all in that :O

Thanks!

Probably level 4, but you have a few higher level skills. (USAG) Your coach will tell you when you need grips, usually in level 5, or when you start to do more swinging type skills.

Floor--about a level 3
UB--level 2, once you get those skills without a spot
Beam--level 4-5, and it depends if those skills are on a high beam
Vault--level 4

It sounds like you need more arm strength, particularly. Do a chalkbucket search on conditioning and you will find a whole bunch.

At Pickle's gym you don't get grips until you have your kip. They actually hinder some of the L4 skills, which are really more drills than skills.

Here's what you would need to compete L4 (I’m sure I am missing plenty)

Floor:
  • Round-off backhandspring
  • Tick Tock (can’t remember the proper name for that one, but it’s where you do a fwo into a bridge and a bwo out of it)
  • Split turn
Uneven Bars (this is where it looks like you are missing the most skills):
  • Shoot-through
  • Mill Circle
  • Cast (you probably have it, but didn’t mention it)
  • Front hip-circle
  • Your pullover and bhc with no spot
Beam
  • Handstand
  • Leap

You aren’t really that far off. It seems like you could compete L4 in everything but bars without too much more training.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm actually shocked that I'm fairly close to Level 4 already, seems my main problem is bars. My coach never actually let me try anything besides squat on (and the flyaway he didn't know about) without spot, so who knows :P

I definitely know I need to work on arm strength, I've been having trouble finding something I can do at home without any special equipment besides my own body.

One thing surely holding me back is the back bend/roundoffbackhandspring. I can only complete a VERY sloppy round off backhandspring with heavy spot, so I don't see myself competing that any time soon! How can I work on motion back flexibility?

some arm conditioning where you dont need anything is

do 10 push ups
10 sholder touches (in push up position, counting one arm)
10 mountian climbers (some ppl call the chase the rabbits..?)
then a straight jump
and repeat.
do that till you get to one
for the shoulder touches and mountian climbers if you count each arm/leg just multiply the number your on by two
ect.
rep 10 X 2 = 20
rep 9 X 2 =18

these work your arms a lot.

and for back flexibility, do backbends near a wall . push up into a bridge with your face faceing the wall, and try to push your shoulders to the wall.
cat stretches
idk what theyre called or if they have a name but sit with your legs together (they can be straight or bent) put your arms behind you and push them behind you as far as you can hold it for as long as you want.

and on beam a tuck 3/4 and a straddle jump are C's (which isn't allowed till level 8/9) so good job on having those before even competiting level 4 !
keep up the good work !
so good

Thanks for all the ideas, I'm going to try them out when I get home from practice tonight :D
I always used to call the arms-behind-you-thing just "Shoulder Stretch 1" in team.

The only reason I actually have those C skills is because on team at school we all have to compete level 9 (3A's 4B's 1C ;D) according to county rules for junior high schools. The only thing I ever competed was beam!

I bet you anything that you'll get your ro-bhs before your bar skills. Bars tend to be harder for most gymnasts (at any level). Work hard and you will get there soon enough.

In USAIGC, you'd be a bronze on beam and bars, and copper on floor and vault.

Levels

Hey!!

I think you sound like a level 4 in USAG and a Bronze in USAIGC. Are you right-handed or left-handed? Because if you're left-handed, you're good to go. But if you're right-handed, then you should probably be working on splits on the right leg at home :)

Conditioning and grips

Hey, I forgot to mention: Get grips right now haha. Talk to your coach about sizing. I recomend the brand 'ten-o'.

As far as conditioning goes...
You can do:
(ABS) 20 v-ups, tuck-ups, and straddle-ups everyday!
(ARMS) About 30 (or however many you can) Push-ups, and do some pull-ups and chin-ups, aswell. Again, everyday!
(LEGS) Leg lifts!! If you're sitting in a pike on the floor, then do about 100. front and back. If you're hanging from the bar.. do around 25. And to work your calves, stand with your feet together, butt sqeased, and lift up and hold for 3 seconds, and go back down. About 100 times.

I know this all sounds like a lot.... but TRUST me. It WORKS!! You'll be able to do your pull-over with NO help!

and as far as your backwalkover goes.. if you keep your arms straight, you shouldn't have a problem. Just go for it! :)

hope this helps! If you don't know how to do any of these exercises, then look them up on youtube, google, or you can just ask me, or even your coach!

Both :P
For tumbling, I use right and for dance I use left. Is that bad? I'm pretty close to flat on right leg already though!

WHAT? Is this the same USAG Level 4 we are talking about? This is entirely off and by a whole bunch.

Don't worry about it

Both :P

It's probably better to use the same side for both in USAG... But in USAIGC It doesn't really matter. Because you make your routine the way you want. My friend (usaigc silver) does the same thing.

No, I think she might be thinking of a different thing...
I just finished level 4. She got the first two right.. not the last though.

That's good, with my gym it seems like you're more likely to take the USAIGC route then the USAG; it's what everyone I know is doing! Seems like USAIGC has more room for like customization also ;D

Nope. You don't do a FHS on floor in L4 either. You do a RO-BHS for tumbling and that's it. (did I miss something else?)
