My daughter has always had trouble with her wristbands shifting under her grips. As she adds difficulty in bars, her wrists are starting to get really chewed up and she’s frustrated by constant wristband adjustments. I just ordered drybands at her request but while we wait for them to come to see if that helps, can anyone help me troubleshoot for her?

So far she’s tried basic Amazon wristbands, which were sometimes ok but hard to find consistent fits- if we found one pair that stayed put the next pair of the exact same brand would be a different size or feel. So then we tried ten-0 wristbands in both the short and long lengths, which were slightly better but then she upgraded and the started shifting and creeping up under her grips again, especially when the wristbands aren’t brand new or lose the tiniest bit of stretch. Taping over her grips helps a bit but doesn’t always work and wears the wristbands out so quickly.

Could this be a grip problem? Something related to her being sweatier than average? It’s becoming a big distraction and fussing with wristbands and grips is taking up so much time that’s it’s starting to eat into her turns and training time. Help!

Until her drybands arrive, if she is using the long Ten-0 wristband and has BUCKLE grips, she could fold the wristband over the bottom of the grips (so the wristband cant ride up under the grips). I'm not sure if it would work as well with velcro grips, but she could always give it a try.

Hope this helps!

She has the long ones and we never thought about folding them. She wears single buckles so I think she could get enough length if she tried that. Worth a try!

I agree with folding it over. Another thought is coban underneath the wristbands. It can get expensive, but if you're willing to invest in it, coban has some grip to it, so could work pretty well.

Update:

She hated the drybands, tried them on and said they felt “way too bulky”, and refuses to take them to the gym. Same with trying to fold over the long wristbands.

I got some more detail and it sounds like the wrist/buckled part of her grip is shifting up toward her palm and then her wristband shifts down or gets caught and folded under at the top. Her coaches don’t seem to have the bandwidth to fuss with grips right now, so she brought everything home for me to look at. The buckle can’t go any tighter without cutting her circulation off. Could her grips be too small? Or too big? She switched grips in August to size 0s in hot shots, but when I remeasured her today she’s within the range for 1s. Her coaches passed out backup pairs in September and made her break in 00s which she’s never used since.

One of my gymnasts who has super small wrists and struggles to get wristbands small enough started putting a thick elastic band around her wristbands to hold them in place before putting on her grips which seemed to help. Thicker wristbands so the current buckle hole is tighter or thinner ones so the next hole is looser could also help stopping the grip moving. Investigating Velcro for her next pair might be an option if the coach is agreeable.

Thank you, these are great ideas. We’ve been focused on thicker wristbands but I didn’t consider going thinner to get to the next buckle hole. Worth a try!

She was taping the wristbands in the way that I think you suggest she should use rubber bands, but they were still rolling down/under. I’m sure that there is a secure, thorough way to do it, but I think she’s always in a bit of a rush because she’s the newest in her group doesn’t want to stand out.

She doesn’t seem to think she can ask her coaches for a no-Velcro-policy exception but I think it might be time to push that.
