I am aware that for Xcel levels, a wide range of skills can be competed to meet scoring requirements. I have seen evidence of this at meets. I have seen gyms that consistently compete more advanced skills than are being trained at my child's gym. For example: Current gym does not require or really train a kip at Xcel Silver, while other nearby gyms compete a kip at that level. Routines at the child's gym are well composed, high start value, and they score well, but some feel that they are "less advanced" than routines performed by competing gyms. The current gym has a philosophy of slow, careful progression, preferring to compete skills that can be performed cleanly. I understand this, but parents are expressing concern that their gymnasts aren't even training skills at practice that nearby gyms are competing.
Is it necessary to be concerned about "slow" skill progression in Xcel, when such a wide range of skills can be competed?
