Your Gym's Philosophy on Repeating Levels

At my gym in order to get moved up a level you have to have most of the skills and you are expected to get the rest of the skills shortly. They will keep you back only if they know you need extra time on that level because the skills in the lower levels such as 4 and 5 are mostly the foundation skills for the higher levels, such as the ROBHS. There is no score requirement but in general you have to know what you are doing and recieve fairly good scores such as in the 8s or 9s.
 
We have no problems with repeating a level. Its so common that we don't even think of it as repeating a level, there is no ideal set time to spend on a level its just you move up when you are ready. Often kids struggle from level 4 to 5 as there are so many big changes like full handspring vault, kips, full 180 split leaps and jumps on beam, full turn on beam, cartwheel or walkover on beam, front tuck beam dismount, back extension to handstand on floor, handsprings and flics. Its a lot to get in 1 year.

There are no set guidelines for how long a child should take to move through each level. Every kid is different, so why DO we call it repeating and stress over it so much? Really? They are just staying in the appropriate level until they are ready to move up and for each kid that will be different.

I have noticed that the term "repeating" seems to be seen more negatively at the compulsory levels than at the optional level. Many gymnasts do those levels for more than one year and that is expected.
