Thanks for the reply. My daughter definitely just seems to "get it" without the repetitions her peers require. She is very brave and I have had to stop her many times from trying aerials and backhandsprings at the playground when she was 5.
Thanks for this. If my daughter wants that life I would support her but it seems a lot more stressful than we would prefer as a family. Definitely would prefer reasonable hours in the gym and few to no injuries!
Thanks, this is helpful. The coaches do have elite experience and I definitely have not been told my daughter is on an elite path. However she is naturally very athletic and is moving ahead of her peers for now.
My daughter is physically very well suited to gymnastics - small, strong, agile...
Coaches, how do you identify a child with the physical potential to become elite? I understand the mental qualities, and I am specifically wondering how these kids are physically different. Is there usually a moment where you see a physical movement and think, okay that kid has the potential to...
Our team has fewer than 5 gymnasts per level and the groups are the biggest in the upper levels. Not sure what the max per team is and if they are equipped to take on more girls.
I don't know what the max number of gymnasts is at each level. Being a small team, they probably don't have the...
Behavior is a language and the team coach has been loud and clear. On top of that, the current coach isn't being honest with you.
I'm going to predict the future and say that if your daughter were on the team your posts might read that the team coach doesn't like your daughter, won't let her...
Also I'm not sure you are getting particularly different answers from the coaches. One says no, the other says she can try, but neither is saying they are confident that she's ready.
Sorry, I didn't answer the first part of your question. The team requirement is one full year of preteam at the gym. Preteam is invite only and the girls start competing at level 4.
Not sure why someone in preteam would need to try out for team. I would expect the coaches to invite the kids...
Even though your daughter sounds talented, she may still benefit from a year of preteam. From your description, she is picking up skills just fine with the much less demanding preteam schedule.
If I were you, I would speak to your pediatrician about your concerns with...
We are at a smallish but successful gym where many coaches seem to be leaving - both team and rec. When the coaches leave they seem to leave in clusters. The remaining coaches are managing the best that they can but groups aren't ideal and they are scrambling to find coaches. Plenty of gym...
Hi! I wanted to update this thread. My daughter was invited onto the level 4 preteam. Privates were never asked of her. She's very excited to begin training for competitions.
Thank you for all the replies. My daughter is happy at the current gym so we will stay for now. It's reassuring to hear that privates should not be part of the preteam selection process.
Yes, it's possible that privates are parent-driven, but I'm not sure. I also see lots of privates among the...
We are currently at a gym with a very competitive team in a large metro area. It is likely one of the two top gyms in the state. The coaches are very selective about who is chosen for the preteteam and team. The team is known for its excellent form, attention to detail, and reasonable hours...
