Asking for a friend (truly, we're still compulsory!)

USAG question for optionals: if a coach parts ways with the gym just before a season starts, and the gymnasts want to compete with another gym, are they able to change?

It is possible but it would really be up to the new gym if they would allow it. The gymnast may not be able to compete though depending on spots being open in the meets that the new gym has already registered for. If current gym and new gym are doing any of the same meets, they might be able to transfer the gymnast to the new gym. The gymnast may not be able to get the new team's leo and warm ups either.

A coach leaving or not has no impact on it...you can leave a gym at any time. As for switching to a new gym, they would have to accept you, and if meet registrations were already done with the old gym, you would most likely lose those as they wouldn't transfer. You would have to register with the new gym if deadlines still allowed, or sit out a year of competition. You would most likely lose all the $ you paid out to the old gym, and depending on if you have a contract, be liable for other expenses, even if you leave.

Yes... but as others have stated... the new club would have to accept you and you may lose all paid expenses to the old gym.

The old gym is being very reasonable about refunds, but it seems like it might be logistically difficult for them to compete with any other gym...can you compete with no gym? Just independent coach+athlete?
