:( Moving from Florida to Cheyenne after competition season. We really love the gym GD (6 y/o L4) attends here; lots of conditioning, skill competency, and tops training. We need to find a comparable gym. Any suggestions?

gymgran -If you a looking at northern Colorado, Fort Collins is as far as you would want to look from Cheyenne and even that is a trip. The Colorado USAG site has a list of gyms: COUSAG. The Wyoming USAG site is: Link Removed luck!

So, in Wyoming, there is Wyoming School of Gymnastics in Cheyenne and one in Laramie. They have a few boys gymnasts that usually compete in Colorado.

In NOrthern Colorado, Fort Collins has 2 gyms. THat is about an hour south of Cheyenne. Mountain Center and GK. My son goes to GK and they have an amazing coach for the boys. The team is pretty good sized with lots of boys and 4 coaches.

Here are some websites for you:

Sorry..just noticed you have a daughter...i automatically think boy ;) But those websites, etc will still be good. They do have girls' in Cheyenne, so that is good!!

Thank y'all for the info....It's going to be a culture shock living away from here. We are hoping for the best.

I grew up and competed in a fairly rural area in Colorado so I understand how hard it is to find a good gym! The drive from Cheyenne to FoCo (Ft Collins) isn't that bad... as long as it's not snowing! (That was the problem with my drive from Breck to my gym in Vail). GK and Mountain are both great gyms, I have friends that compete and competed for both. GK also seems to be developing a small elite program (well compared to other gyms in the area besides Denver and Colorado Springs). Brandi Jay competes there. Good luck with the move! Feel free to ask any questions if you have more!

nobody there. :(

Do you mean people or gyms dunno? LOL! We sometimes drove to Wyoming just to buy fireworks because there's no restrictions :-) And there's a big rodeo there. But then again I'm from a town of less than 5,000 (minus the tourists)

kinda both. didn't mean it in a bad way, just in a rural kinda way from where the poster is moving from. there are towns there where there are 167 people. then you have to drive 100 miles to another town that has 142. i have friends in and around that area that drive 50 miles to go get their mail. i'm spoiled.:)

I totally understand, just giving you a hard time :-p Once we went to go rock climbing on a state highway between Laramie and Cheyenne thinking it was a more direct way to where we needed to go. we got on it and it was a dirt road. then we couldn't move for over an hour because we got surrounded by a herd of cattle! From then on we took I-80, I-25 or 287. no more state or county roads in wyoming for us lol.

GK seems to be expanding their program so it would be worth checking out. As BriBri said the problem with the drive would be when winter type weather sets in--can be from mid Oct to April.
Wyoming School of Gymnastics I would rate as ok. Wyoming is a beautiful state, but very sparse with gymnastics. I think they have their entire state meet(L4-10) in 1 weekend. You might want to check the Wyoming USAG site.

The drive from Cheyanne to Ft. Collins in the winter is a real bear. If hyou aren't used to driving in the snow I wouldn't suggest it.

True, but this year it was reallly easy, the Front Range barely had any snow. (Next winter might be completely different you can never count on the weather in that area!) I think it all got stuck on the other side of the Divide where I live! Though there was a lot in the eastern mountains. The biggest thing about 25 from Cheyenne to FoCo is the wind. Just a couple inches of snow can turn into a white out. A few years ago they had to shut down 25 from Denver north to Wyoming, south to New Mexico and I 70 east to Kansas. But this year all the snow was in the mountains and barely any at all along 25.

I don't want to scare you though! It's definitely doable. Like I said my gym was in Vail (it was actually the closest gym within 75 miles or so with a USAG team!) and I lived in Breckenridge, and that stretch of 70 is either clogged with ski traffic and semis or shut down over Vail Pass bc of snow. It wasn't too bad, but my mom grew up in Quebec then Colorado and is a great snow driver and I learned to drive in the winter in Summit County. There might be a few days it gets really bad along 25 but it's alot better than having to do 70! My coach understood if I missed practice because the highway got shut down over the pass. There were also days (more than a couple) where I got stuck on the west side of the Pass and had to stay at my coach's or teammates houses in Eagle County.

Since you're moving from Florida I might suggest a few driving lessons in the snow or just practicing a lot before you drive the highway or whatever. I see tons of cars on I-70 in the mountains with out of state plates in the ditch. 4 wheel drive will still go sideways, studded tires are key (I got some for Christmas two years ago lol so I could drive myself to gymnastics) and be careful with black ice! Keep us updated on your move and gym choice. CO gymnastics has a special place in my heart :-)
