Any suggestions for getting straight arm kips? We have a couple kids that can get up on the bar but have bent arms so they have to push up and then cast. They have gotten better since summer but still struggling. They have their high bar correct and connected.

put them in support on the low bar. stand directly behind them. put your shoulder against their bottom/back of thighs. place 1 of your arms around their legs just above their knees. place your other hand on the bar and hold on to balance yourself. tell them to lean back on to your shoulder. keep pushing against their bottom to keep them against the bar. tell them to keep their elbows locked out.

if you are standing on their right side their shoulders will be leaning as far back as '2 o'clock. then tell them to go back to support and NOT to bend their elbows. you gently push their bottom against the bar as they do this. kinda like a teeter tawter. at first they will roll their grips over the top of the bar (cause they have no swing) and when this happens they will bend their elbows. repeat...we'll do this again and i don't want you to bend your elbows. i want your arms completely straight.

so then, they lean back and then go back up with you applying gentle pressure against their bottom against the bar. you will see after a couple of attempts that they will then begin to keep their elbows straight.

the hardest segment of the kip is that last 5 minutes. they instinctively activate their biceps and 'pull' up to the bar instead of activating their triceps to put pressure against the bar and 'push' to get up. this little drill 'awakens' their tricep tendons.:)
