Hi all,

I’m very curious to know how many hours a week your U.K. based gymnasts train at age 9.
My daughter currently trains 6 hours a week split into 2 sessions but I often feel like this isn’t enough ?

Thanks

It really depends on what level and pathway your daughter is currently? it could be anywhere from 2 hours upwards.

Enough for what? There are kids her age in recreational classes cheerily doing 45 minutes a week, others on competitive squad pathways doing eight or more hours. Last time I checked, BG's official guidance for coaches said that 8-10 year olds should be doing no more than 10 hours a week. It's all about what level she's at what level her coaches are working her towards.

Enough to get her to a level she wants to be at.

She is zinc at the minute and obviously dreams of being in the Olympics one day (she is 9)

My daughter is 9, turning 10 this year, she is doing 16hours a week. 4 sessions of 4hours.

My just turned 7 year old does 9 hours a week. Using xcel as a path to optionals- finishing up xcel silver. No elite goals- college goals too early to tell.
I think 9-10 hours is the max she could handle at this age.

Personally if you want Your Child to vie for a most prestigious International Olympic Committee Medal 🏅 then as a Coach I recommend at least 6 Hours a DAY of Training. Simply This a globally Competitive Gymnastics Sport; and just like ANY other "I.O.C."-Sports Competition.

6 hours a day as a 9 year old. You have to be joking ? That’s borderline child abuse

6 hours a day, I think is only common for high level gymnastics like gymnasts training for pre-elite (hopes)/elite/levels 9-10.
For lower levels I think doing 6 hours a day is way too much and at 9 years old, totally excessive.
Maybe some poster read quickly and thought it was 6 hours a week.
I'd say competitive gymnast at 9 years old, if they are kind of the typical, not super elite prospect, would be training around 10 hours a week, if they're a little lower level a little less (6-8 hours a week), if a little higher some more (12-15). If they're elite prospects could be training probably around 20 hours a week.

Sorry, read that as hours and not days! 6 hours a day is definetly a lot for a 9 year old

Hey,
you should ask the coach that question.

6 hours per week for a Zinc 9 year old is on the low side but not unusual. Because the Classic Challenge is all encompassing you could be competing against 9 year olds on the grades pathway training 12-14 hours per week or against gymnasts with similar training hours that don't compete grades.
If your daughter wants more you will need to find out whether your current club can offer that for her.
