WAG JO National Championships proposal.

The current system is already setup to absorb the addition of an all-a rounder with a tie for 7th in every age group from every region, when in reality there are never more than a handful. It could absorb one event specialist per event per age group per region without much issue I think.

I'd like to see event specialists added but really don't like the idea of lowering the number of All Arounds. At the youngest divisions, it's already so hard to qualify anyway. Perhaps do top 6, but not top 5.

Why not do top seven and then allow for event specialist added?

How many event specialists would actually travel a great distance to compete one event? Sure, if it is a short drive but across country? I am thinking not many. It would be different if there were event champions, like the old NIT, (which I suppose some would be), where they might stand a chance of winning/placing high. it would be interesting to see what the potenial makeup would be (event winners are regionals or lower on the list?). I know it can be researched through mms - just don't have the time at the moment to go through it all

Ok, currently, I don't think if an event specialist wins at Regionals that they can go to Nationals. IF they made it so, I would take my dd if she made it. Especially if she were a level 10 and hoping for college. If you don't do AA right now, you totally miss out on the exposure of possibly making Nationals.

I am not saying that my dd wouldn't go (we have spent a few seasons traveling to meets for just one or two events due to injuries), but that could be one very expensive trip for just one event. If the coach is already going for other gymnasts, the call is easier but if it is a lone gymnast, especially one with a lower score (compared to other regions)? I don't know...

I’ll respond. I still see an issue with very high scoring gymnasts missing out because of numbers in some regions.

I do like giving specialists the chance to compete at nationals. I didn’t study the document in detail, so I don’t know if this is the best path but I’m in favor of opening the dialogue.

What TXGYMFAN SAID . It has now morphed into a 7 AA with one specialist, which I can swallow. I would prefer a separate session for event specialist, but life is about compromise.

I know it's a pipe dream, but why can't they do it like our region handles States-into-Regionals.

They take all the girls who qualified to State and then divide them up into equal groups (using numbers based on who qualified to States, not using the National age group chart). Then, after States the girls that qualify to Regionals are then put in the National Age group.

Why can't every Region go with that type of breakdown.........so at Regionals, every Region divide the number of girls that qualified to their Regionals up into equal age groups (not the National Age group breakdown--get to that in a minute). Take the top 7 (and 2 alternates) that qualify from each Region and once all Regionals are over then divide all those that qualified into equal age groups again -- THIS is when a National Age Group chart would be released.....based on the girls who made it out of Regionals.

I realize that you wouldn't know your age bracket until say a week after regionals, but isn't that much fairer than the system now.....where Sr A in one region has 35 and Jr C maybe has 18 girls in it And/Or maybe in another region that same age group has 10 or less in it?

Seems that this way would be a much fairer way to get out of Regionals......or maybe I'm just too optimistic

I wouldn't want to reduce it from 7 to 5 girls in the AA. Just add the 2 event specialists! They shouldn't be worried about the length of the meet - it's nationals, we know our whole day is gone what is another hour or two at that point??

I read it in its entirety....not a fan of the proposed changes of dropping AA qualifiers from 7 to 5. I think 7 from the 8 regions is a good number. If you wanted to ADD the 2 high event scorers to the mix , fine but I think an event specialist that wins her event goes to JOs so that would add 1 more. And like txgymfan, I see the larger regions , who already have expressed dismay in the past about high scoring qualifiers being left out of JOs ,being unlikely to welcome this.

I liked the NIT as well as it gave a large #of gymnasts to compete at the National meet setting....but no one asked me..

I was thinking they could keep the current format but have the individual event qualifiers compete on friday of Nationals

because that makes too much sense and would only strengthen a certain region, and well..... no one (except us) wants that to happen...

thats just a common excuse. In reality they have so much time built in between sessions that we all literally leave and come back after eating...

It changed a few years ago, getting rid of NIT and adding 2 age groups so those girls who would have gone to NIT now go to Nationals. Unfortunately, it still didn't solve the issue of some regions having mid 37s not qualifying

There was a thread about the meet being pushed back to a later date this year, but I can’t find it. I wanted to comment that I hope they aren’t keeping this change after 2019. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but this year’s date is the same as many high school graduations in our state. We are used to girls missing prom for JOs, but now they have to choose graduation or JOs, both of which are very important. I know one of our seniors qualified, and that is her graduation weekend. She should not have to choose between the two things. Any other regions/states graduate as early as we do? I hope they move the dates back to their original weekends next year.

USAG didn’t / doesn’t care. They just want to make money off hosting nationals ...

I feel like in that thread people stated they had gymnasts missing prom/graduation/finals every year with the old date. I think no matter when it is, there'll be those kind of conflicts, unless you make it April or mid-June.
