Oh, and don't forget people, that free hip......MUST be minimum to horizontal.....if not, you get no credit again and the kid gets creamed again.

I think of level 6 like level 5 but with NO excuses.....

No, you do not get credit for the skill if it is barely touching. If you can clear the whole bar and not get to horizontal, you basically don't get credit for the basic skill either because ALL optional routines are subject to the minimum requirements.....wether you are L6 or L10..... That's what makes it for big girls only. You get no accommodations for squeaking by.......you either have the skills and get rewarded, or you don't.

I don't know what you are trying to link, it just takes me to USA gymnastics website. Yes, the rules are the same for all optional levels, a clear hip is a B regardless of height as long as hips clear the bar for all optional levels (handstand is C).

And there's more than one deduction for finishing the clear hip below horizontal......I'm not sure what the total is but I think our coach told us you lower your SV, and take a hit of .40 which CAN add up to almost a full point.....here is the code of points which applies to level 6-10

“EXAMPLE: Performs Clear hip circle BWD, finishing 45° from vertical—award ‘B’ VP credit for Clear hip circle BWD—no deduction for insufficient amplitude
45° and below from vertical
Award lower VP (if applicable)
Deduct ⬆0.20 for insufficient amplitude
Rule of thumb: Deduct full •0.20 if body is 90° (horizontal) or below
Exception: ‘B’ Clear hip circle 3.204:
Deduct ⬆0.40 for insufficient amplitude
Deduct •0.05 - 0.25 for 46° - 89° from vertical
Deduct •0.30 at horizontal (90°)
Deduct •0.35 - 0.40 under horizontal
NOTE: Hips contacting bar, considered back hip circle and receives ‘A’ VP 7.101—will NOT meet SR 360° clear circling element Level 7/8

Yes a clear hip below horizontal gets up to 0.4 in execution deduction for amplitude (every clear circling skill and cast is subject to execution deduction for amplitude). But it is still a B and does not affect start value. Everything you posted up there confirms that. Only if hips touch bar is the skill devalued to an A(turns into a back hip circle)

There is this one judge that Puma Jr swears loves her! Lol! And I do fear the "cute points" she may have gotten this last meet won't be there for states...oh well!

I'm no coach so my head gets spinny when trying to grasp the code of points and what the coach says......I know we went to a few meets where our girls got no credit for the Free hip, and they were good free hips coming out just below horizontal.......
But ahywho, all I know is every free hip and cast better be as close to HS as possible.....

We were at a L4 meet this year. Kids were scoring 9.1-9.4s a lot during the season. This meet highest L4 was 8.7 (it took first). Apparently we had the judge who was "the bar" judge on a national level. Whatever the max deduction was, she gave them all and I mean all, max dedutctions to every last kid.

There was no partial credit at this meet on bars and 6 and 7s were common (and it wasn't states either)

At our level 6 state meet the judges were harsh on any form breaks...leg separation, slight arm or knee bent, any arch in cast. There was one 9.1 and that was the high score. There were more 7s and 6s than I have ever seen at a meet.

Ironically my kid's best bars (where she actually hit a kip chs on low bar for first and only time last season) were where we had the judges from heck, and she got her second lowest score. EVERYONE was talking about it, and supposedly coaches pitched a b****. Everyone got reamed. It just sucked. Didn't seem to help the scores, but probably made them feel better to vent, bahaha...

You can YouTube L6 bar routines and it gives you a pretty good idea about what's going on around different states. Some of the routines are amazing, and some are just getting by.

It's so funny, I remember wanting to have my DD get to optionals as fast as possible and now, I miss compulsory!!! Levels 2-5 were so nice and relaxing.....and the judges were really very nice to the little girls.....for the most part.

Now, it's totally different. It's SOOOOOOO competitive and it's hard for girls to feel good if they have middle of the road routines because they really won't walk out with medals......

I would highly suggest if you have a gymmie that is a solid L5, and struggling with CHS or Free hips, dont do L6 unless you have prepared her. We had two girls simply quit right after states because they were crushed all season long.

Unless of course your kid has always sucked at bars and rarely places anyway, so it won't matter!!!

On a serious note, my kid actually placed in things this year, unlike the hell ish lvl 4 season. Did pretty well. Even with bars....but never placed in bars. She never has though, hee hee hee....

Well true, if one event is not on par with the rest, then I suppose I would.....
We have a L7 who is simply amazing on vault and floor......she reaches SO high with her tumbling and her vault is spectacular. Her beam is very good to......but bars? Forget about it.

I have seen this sentiment before, and I'm trying to repeat it to myself every once in awhile because I am so "there" right now. I can't help sometimes feeling like I want Puma Jr to be DONE with compulsories, but you wise BTDT people are helping me keep it in check...thank you.
