At first I thought this was an April Fools joke but it’s real! They are adding a mixed gender team gymnastics competition to the 2028 Olympics! This will be an incredible opportunity to raise the profile of Men’s gymnastics. I wonder how it will work with men having 6 events and women only 4?

It still sounds fake. I guess we'll see.

It makes sense, Gymnastics is the most followed sport in the summer games so having more opportunities to see it is in the IOC best interest.

This is interesting to me since track and field added a mixed 4x400 relay. However, the country gets to pick the team competitors. In the USA with its depth of running the members qualifying for finals are usually lower level runners say the 3rd - 5th place finishers from Olympic trials. But after reading the description it sounds like the team make up consists of the top qualifiers from the qualifying day? I can't imagine Simone or Fred wanting to add another day of competition with the pressure and stress of staying focused for their AA and team events. I would hope this would give say the alternates a chance to perform instead of already taking someone who has qualified in many finals. Plus you are adding in another day of risking injury etc. I love the idea but I think it needs some fine tuning.

This wouldn't be able to happen, the Olympics don't consider alternates Olympians, they don't get credentials etc. For an alternate to come in, someone else would have to be swapped out and stripped of their credentials. Since they aren't adding any additional spots for competitors, the athletes performing will have to come from the team the US picks. I agree for someone like Simone Biles, adding another full day of competition seems crazy. I'm curious to see how this all plays out!

I agree they wouldn't give this spot to the alternates, but if someone who was 2-per-country'd out of AA or event finals could get another chance at competing, that would be great!
