8 "butt shows" is 8 too many. Just sayin'.

Where is the crying-laughing-because-it's-so-true emoji when you need it???

OMG the butt-shows might be sorta cute in a routine when you're literally 6 or 7, but on a young-looking 17 year old it becomes that strange horrible intersection of innocent child vs sexy pose - ick and awkward and just... horrible.

ETA: For my own daughter, age 11, NFW she will ever do one of those in a routine. Ick.

One can only hope they devalue the wolf turn so we don't have to see it ad nauseum in every floor and beam routine!!! Do something else ladies! It's kind of like the argument for why everyone sticks to a yurchenko full...because they do it well...only not everyone does these turns well and they just have a ragged look about them....rant over.

I had high hopes for Morgan Hurd this meet but nerves seem to get the best of her...bummer. Ragan Smith is steadily getting better, albeit a shaky beam routine but a great save on the aforementioned wolf turn! She should be a lock for Worlds. I'm not a huge fan of her new floor routine but I definitely prefer it over her previous one. It showcases her skills and that is her goal I'd guess.
Mccusker looked pretty decent and in better physical health than Classic...she also should be on a short list for Worlds. I think Locklear's run as the specialist du jour is coming to an end...she literally has bars as her one strong event, and with other gymnasts getting close to her or passing her in scores , and doing AA (and able to be back up on other events) , she's becoming too risky to pick...but who knows what Valeri is thinking. With this in mind, I can see Jade Carey as the specialist with her floor and vault strengths...for a kid who was pretty unknown, she looks terrific , in general, minus the sit down tonight on vault. There's also Chiles, Frazier and Thomas who could sneak in and snag a spot as well as Schennikova who had a rough beam and floor tonight but did win Classic.
The format of this years worlds of no team competition helps keep Locklear in the game. Now if it comes down to a choice between Locklear and McCusker, Locklear would definitely be trouble. But it's still shaping up like McCusker is the 2nd best all arounder, so that helps Locklear. Shchennikova is her competition right now. I would still give Locklear the edge because of her consistent execution internationally, but it's close.

At this point looking like Smith and McCusker for AA, leaving two specialist spots. Carey for vt/fx and though I think Locklear is still frontrunner for the other because of her consistent execution, it will come down to whether Valerie thinks he can trust Shchennikova on the world stage. Winning bars at this meet might just give her the edge. It also helps that Smith and McCusker are the two best beamers, both world finals quality, so they don't really need a beam specialist. Just Shchennikova or Locklear for a 2nd shot at a bar medal.

Chiles, Frazier and Thomas are all very good all-arounders(I would put Thomas at the top of that group right now, with her weakest event right now as vault, an event she is not going to make a final in anyway) and would make good alternates, but they aren't better than Smith or McCusker for AA, aren't better than Carey for vt, or McCusker/Locklear(or Shchennikova) for ub, or Smith/MCusker for beam, or Smith/Carey for fx.

Just wanted to add a note about Carey. She would still easily make vault final at worlds with a fall(and even have a shot at a medal), that's how good she is compared to what the rest of the world is capable of doing right now.

Where was she until this year?!? She's now one of my favorites on floor and I had never heard of her until Classics.

:p? And yes, when my daughter got her 1st optional routine at age 11/12, I told the choreographer "no booty shaking, no butt shows, no shimmying the shoulders." She laughed and said not to worry, she agreed. My dd had a classy, artistic, elegant, graceful floor routine at age 12 that didn't make you cringe or say "oh my." And I didn't have to watch my little girl stick her butt out over and over to get "cute points' or to score 9's just about every time she competed.

If you're wondering what I mean about "butt shows" watch the clip from Stick It when Haley makes fun of Joanna's beam routine.:D

YES - good tip - I need to communicate this to our choreographer.

Also, no wolf turns - LOL.

On that topic, perhaps I'll suggest to my daughter (and maybe her teammates) that she simply fail miserably at any wolf turn training "Gosh coach, these are just not going well for me" and they will eventually give up and she can do something else. ANYTHING ELSE. lol.

did not get a chance to watch.. questions:

1. How many gymnasts did an Amanar??
2. How many Jrs were doing DTY or some other 10.0 SV vaults (collegiate scoring)
3. How many gymnasts did a non-Yurechenko entry vault

Did anyone else catch that comment from Tim Dagget when he said he was talking to Morgan Hurd, about how she was adopted from China....and how the Chinese are going to be really mad at World's when they see how good she is? (he said that to her face)
Is it just me or was that a completely inappropriate thing to say?

1 - Chiles and Carey. Chiles has a great Amanar but no 2nd vault.
2 - Quite a few from the juniors, I counted 12.
3 - Didn't see one from anyone but Carey. And she is the only one doing 2 different vaults

Interestingly only one 1 1/2(Selena Harris). Rest doubles or singles and a couple layouts from the juniors

Yes. It was.

SMH

I didn't see it, but if that is true, he should flat out apologize to her and her family personally for his inexcusably poor judgment.

I enjoyed watching the juniors. I am definitely not a wolf turn fan in any way, but I did think that Emma Malabuyo looked very graceful with hers on floor. I struggled to watch Regan on floor because of the music edit being so bad. I wouldn't say I have a problem with a cutesy ttyle if it is in character, but when the music is so bad is distracts you from the gymnastics they need to fix that.

Ragan must like this style of dance/choreography. I don't think age has anything to do with it's appropriateness. She's 17, let her do what she likes, yk? There are actual legit tap dance moves in her routine, which I appreciated. If it's going to be that style of choreography, at least it's taking from actual dance technique, in the same way ballet shows up in floor routine choreography.
