It helped my daughter because sometimes when she did her free hip, she would sometimes be leaning a bit too far back when she made the move to squat on. Being able to do the sole circle gave her a chance to save it.
 
Based on my (very limited) experience, most girls did prefer the squat on, and I know my DD struggled to connect hers with a jump to the high bar. But, when a girl had it down well, it was really a pretty skill to watch, especially when you knew she was saving a potential fall in a routine! There don't seem to be a whole lot of chances in compulsory gymnastics for an athlete to recover from a mistake without obvious deductions!
 
We have most of our girls do them, for taller gymnasts I find it is far better than the squat on as they can jump to the high bar from a lower angle, putting them in a much better position for the long kip.
