I don't get it though- countries that can't field a full team can send one, two, or however many athletes they can produce. You don't *have* to compete with five gymnasts, or whatever makes a team this week.
So it will make no difference to the strength of "lesser" gymnastic countries.
Well, the fifth and sixth best team member is certainly not the best of the best in the all around and might not be the best of the best on any particular event. Some of these gymnasts from countries that can't field a team really are the best of the best on at least one event.
Can you give an example? Name and event?

Hong Un-Jong, vault
Epke Zonderland, high bar
Neither North Korea's women's team nor the Netherlands' men's team were in team finals. Not sure how many other athletes either country had competing at worlds, though I think the Netherlands had a team.
they won't be able to cause it doesn't exist. Jessica Lopez is one of a kind. you won't find one of her in any of the other counties.
Aljaz is a guy! we are talking about girls!! i could have said Epke.
i like your name...thecurseofthechalkyhand. kind of appropriate to the p-bar fail.
The vast majority of level 10s do not have the talent or ability to go elite. You don't just decide to move on to elite and do it. It takes enormous skill, ability, and dedication. And really total devotion to the sport. The elite girls usually home school, have little or no social life. And their families make enormous sacrifices too. Anyone who thinks their daughter has the ability needs to find a gym and a coach who has the ability as well. But the truth is we are talking about a very very very small minority of girls.Bear in mind, my child is nowhere near either of these levels. But I read posts that talk about how girls stay at level 10 for 5 years...I am confused as to why they don't move on to elite and wondering what the differences are, as I know they must be big...I just don't get it. Do the gymnasts have to be in ited to do elite? I figure this is a good place to ask...
We started talking about cutting the teams and where those spots go. That's guys and girls. Honestly, I think this whole emphasis on specialists is being driven by the guys side of the sport anyway. The women get saddled with the same rules for the sake of consistency.
Thank you. The curse went into effect right away. First victim? The letter D. Separated from the herd forever.
