Parents Using back instead of core on Ab exercises

My DD has been having a lot of trouble doing leg lifts the right way. She can never get her legs all the way up and is always using her back for them. This has been going on for about 4 years now and we don’t know if there’s any way to fix it or if it’s too late. She is an Xcel Diamond and 14 yrs old so she is expected to be able to do them. If anyone has any tips please let us know.
 
I recommend Pilates. Pilates teachers are really good at helping people activate their core muscles properly and they work all the different muscle groups. There are videos, classes, and private lessons available depending on your needs and budget.
