Do they usually not announce who is the alternate when they announce the team?

For Worlds they just bring everyone and announce the alternate right before the competition starts, they did this for sure for the last two team Worlds in 2014 and 2015. The travel/housing/team roster requirement etc for the team is much less restrictive than for O's, where the alternate cannot stay with the team.

Yes, they will likely see who looks better in podium training and then decide on the alternate.

Agree Morgan looked tentative. She is lucky she is still solidly in the top 3 of this group on UB even on an off day, so don’t think her spot on the team is in jeopardy. And agree Ragan looked so much better. But being the 5th best AA and still not super strong on any individual event is not quite enough. She only finished 3rd on BB because Simone put her hands down(which will be considered by all an aberration) and she had a great vault day but gaining a tenth on that event isn't enough to leave someone else off. Someone will have to prove themselves unreliable in podium training or injured for her to sneak in. The team should be the best 3 or 4 all-arounders and then the one or two spectacular enough at event to have a good medal chance. With Carey out that only leaves Eaker for a specialist spot. Eaker proved she deserves that spot. So we just go with top 4 AA plus Eaker.

My guess for team finals:
VT - Hurd, McCallum, Biles
UB - Hurd, Biles, McCusker
BB - McCusker, Eaker, Biles
FX - Hurd or McCusker, McCallum, Biles

I guess my point on Smith was that after seeing her at Championships, I didn't think she'd even challenge for ANY type of spot on this year's Worlds team....team member, specialist or even alternate....she just looked so broken in August. I was having nightmares of her becoming this quad's Rebecca Bross, and for a kid with so much talent, that's sad. Hopefully Kim doesn't train her into the ground...

Agree, she looked SO much better than I would have expected. Though I think it might have been better for her in the long run to just fully rest and recover will eyes on 2019 and 2020 instead if continue training and pushing to be alternate...again. Agree with the train into the ground fears...

Ragan looked so much better - I was not a huge fan of her gymnastics last quad, but I am really pulling for her. Not sure she should push it for these worlds though. Hurd is lucky she has bars ... that was not the best showing. I can’t quite get over her mean girl treatment of Simone this summer, so I find it hard to root her now.

I was hoping Ragan would shut it down to completely heal or even get the recommended surgery for her injury so she could be guns a blazing in 2019...kinda like Simone is now with her comeback...there's no doubts, she's back and she's better than ever. But if Ragan wants to prove she's not done, well , I have one piece of advice for Kim ...please pace this gymnast so she is viable for 2020.

And Hurd...if she weren't the "reigning world champ" , I don't think she'd be in the discussion as much ....she looked very shaky as a total package. I hold my breath every time she's out competing...and yes, I find it a little tougher to root for her after her dreadful behavior in the summer.

A guaranteed mid 14 on UB, 55 AA on an off day and finishing 2nd at USA National Championships 2 months ago keeps Morgan in the mix, too, in addition to last years title. Can’t quibble with the feelings about her behavior.

Can someone please explain why Ragan is suddenly on the World team, and who is not? She was not on the original team, and every where I check, the original posts have been removed or changed.

Same original 5 are on team. The nominative roster(essentially tentative roster) was 5, Smith is the 6th. She is presumed the alternate, but one of the 6 will be named officially the alternate after podium training. Roster for Worlds can be changed right up until start of competition.

The original list had someone else. I don't remember Ragan being on the list when it was first released.

Shilese Jones was on the nominative list I think?? At selection camp, Smith looked much better than Nationals and outperformed Jones. I still kind of wish they had left her off so she could heal though.

Sorry if I missed this, but does anyone know what channel Worlds will be broadcast on? I don't see it on the USAG TV schedule or on the World Doha webpage. Thanks!

Yes! Jones was the alternate listed on the nominative roster submitted a couple weeks ago.

No, I'm talking about the release after camp. I do not remember Ragan being on the list, and everyone was talking how she wasn't ready anyway. then I see her on the list. It's very confusing.
