When my daughter was considering moving gyms she tried out at multiple gyms and then went with the one she liked the most. I of course felt guilty turning others down but that’s just because I’m an overthinking people pleaser. I don’t think it’s unusual to try out at multiple places and gyms...
Just to give you some context, my daughter was also 8 when she tried out for Gotham’s DP team. She was coming off a bars state championship, had her kip, BWO on beam, ROBHS x 2 - and she’s not the star of the team. Gotham will expect a lot from an 8 year old trying out for DP team.
I know a few girls who transitioned there from DP, not due to any lack of talent, but more so a desire to not have to make the huge time commitment that DP requires or stick with the same fixed skill progression. Still wonderful coaches and a great atmosphere. And watching them train I am amazed...
It truly depends on what your daughter and you are looking for. My daughter wanted to be on the most competitive team that would give her the chance to get to college or elite. She is happy training 20+ hours per week including weekends. For her Gotham made sense. That is not everyone’s goals or...
My daughter has always been on the DP track but I know there are gyms in the city that offer Xcel (92y, Chelsea Piers) and others than offer USAIGC (Gotham, NYC Elite). My daughter has friends in both Xcel and USAIGC at those gyms. Xcel and USAIGC seem to be very similar programs from what I’ve...
I don’t have experience with the coaching or atmosphere but from a performance perspective, we compete against most of the Long Island gyms and the ones with consistently good results are Apex, Gold Medal Huntington, Gold Medal Levittown, and LI Elite (to name a few). We went to a meet at Apex...
I think in addition to the nerves, it helps the young athletes learn how to recover from mistakes quickly in a competition environment. I’m glad my daughter learned in levels 2 and 3 that a choreo mistake on floor or a fall off the beam in front of judges isn’t the end of the world, it’s a...
We started at our gym in level 4 after transferring from another gym so not sure how the preteam to team selection works.
At level 4 there were 8 girls.
At level 6 there are 9 girls. About half of this year’s level 6 team were last year’s level 4 girls. Some of last year’s level 4s left and the...
Love this thread! My daughter has been steady so far.
6: started rec, pulled out after a couple weeks and put on pre-team
7: L2
8: L3
9: moved gyms, L4
10 (current): L6
Her goal is to get to level 10 and college, but we’ll see how things play out. She also dances and participates in at least a...
A couple of years ago my daughter’s team (in Manhattan) discontinued their DP program after her level 3 season. The two gyms that were recommended we pursue were Gotham and Galaxy based on the quality of their programs and their vision for the future - meaning those programs were built to get...
Yeah, my original question was somewhat self-limiting in that I was curious to know whether parents of gymnasts who had actually made it to certain levels could look back and remember a time when things seemed to change or click. I completely understand that you can’t actually know with 100%...
I wonder if maybe she put extra pressure on herself after coming off such an excellent meet. You mentioned you could see her nerves from the stands. Maybe after finishing 1AA she consciously or subconsciously set that as the “bar” for herself and then felt too much pressure at her next meet...
