My daughter is doing a skill on beam and we aren't sure if it's a side sumi or a side aerial. In the air her legs are straight but she lands sideways on the beam with legs bent in a squat position. Would this be counted as a side aerial and if so would there be a deduction for the landing? Or would it be counted as a side sumi with an incorrect air position? My daughter isn't sure and we haven't gotten clarification from her coach.

A side aerial ends the same way as a cartwheel (front to back).
A side somi starts like a side aerial. The gymnast pushes off her front leg just like in the aerial but instead of circling her legs like in a cartwheel, she will pull herself around until she lands sideways on the beam. In a side somi, the full rotation in the air is one quarter of a full twist.

Do you know what the deduction would be? I guess it would be a side aerial but finishing sideways on the beam with a squat. Or is there no deduction with that?

There is no way to tell without a video. I'm also thinking if your child has a skilled enough coach to be doing a side aerial on beam, they should be able to tell you what skill she is doing? That just seems very strange to me.
Right? You would think. I explained it pretty clearly. It's basically a side aerial but instead of the normal landing, she turns side ways on the beam with her feet apart in a squat. Any idea what, or if, there is a deduction for that?

I don't know about JO, but in FIG code there's a small deduction (precision) for doing a side somi with straight legs. So I think if it looks like what I'm picturing in my head it would be credited as a side some with some precision deductions.
Though JO might be different,

iirc...
If the judges decide it's a side aerial, then the deduction is 0.2 for landing sideways and up to 0.3 for landing in a squat.
If the judges decide it's a side somi, then the deduction is 0.3 for straight legs and 0.1 for not grabbing her legs.
