Hi, has anyone seen any research on appropriate finish times for pre-teens? I've seen research on recommended hours of training, but little on finish times (other than recommended hours of sleep). Our club has finish times almost an hour later than other clubs in our area. How late is too late after a day of school?

It's also important to consider how long it actually is before they go to bed though, if you want to have a shower, eat dinner, etc after you get home. If you are going to bed at 10pm, then waking up at 7am, and then doing it all again the next day, that could be heavy.

I suggest you ask some parents or maybe even athletes at your gym and see what they think.

It depends on when school starts in your area. Kids need time to drive home, eat, shower, and get the recommended hours of sleep before waking up for school. The time will be different depending on whether school starts at 7am or 9am. Where we life, elementary school starts at 8am and gym ends at 8pm. That’s really cutting it close for many of the little boys. A minute later would be crazy for that age.

My girls finished at 8:30 pm for their entire club careers … and we had a 1.5-2 hour drive home after that . I would drive home with the lights on in my minivan like i was a city bus and they would eat their dinners (that i brought) and finish up homework. When we got home at 10:30-11 pm, they jumped in the shower and went to bed.

Their school started at 9 am and that was a huge help with this because they weren’t getting up at 6-7 am the next day…

Im in the xcel program so our youngest girls are 7 and our oldest are in highschool. The bronzes (the lowest) leave at seven thirty silver(my level) leaves at eight and gold and platinum leave at eight thirty so im a pre teen and that seems normal in my area

When I competed Xcel Silver at my first gym our age range was 8-14 and we practiced 2x a week the first from 6-9 the second from 5:30-8:30. Of course the earlier practice was a Friday, so it didn't matter how late we were up that night. I had to be up at 6:45 for school the next day (8th grade).

When I competed Xcel Gold for my second gym we were combined with the Silvers and our age range was 7-15 and we went 5-8 every night. I had to be up at 6am for school the net day (9th grade).

My 10 year olds, boy level 5, girl xcel gold, both finish at 9pm which I think it too late. Thankfully we live right around the corner from our gym and I can get them home, showered and in to bed relatively quickly. But its taxing on the whole family to be up that late.

I am a Xcel Platinum and I train with the Xcel Golds. We start practice at 5:00/4:30 and end practice at 8:00 and before meets 7:30/7:40. The youngest on our team is 11 and the oldest is 14. Our xcel silvers practice from 5:00 to 8:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 the youngest is 9 and the oldest is 14. Our bronze's practice for 2 hours either 4:00 to 6:00 or 6:00 to 8:00. The youngest is 6 the oldest is 8.

I think practice should end at least 12 hours before local school district start time. If school starts at 8am, gym should end no later than 8pm. That allows local athletes enough time to eat, shower, and get 9-10 hours of sleep. I think it’s enough to accommodate local athletes, since commuting is a choice.
Some would say extra curricular gymnastics is a choice… especially in a private club setting . Our gym adhered to being closed when it was a snow day but for the rest, those were the hours.
