More flawed logic, no coach in any sport puts together a team based upon potential injuries.
Of course they do. Happens all the time…..

Your quarterback is getting older you draft a younger one.

You have a pitcher dealing with injuries, you trade for a pitcher before the trade deadline, for one to be ready for the playoffs.

Happens all the time…. I think it’s officially called analytics

Also, any thoughts on why the US did not pick its 5th alternate (either the next ranked AA gymnast or a specialist)??
No idea. And based on Shilese Jones's recent post she is feeling pretty betrayed. Can't say I blame her. Tom stuck to his guns about taking people in all around order right up until he got to her name and then decided they just didn't need one more person. Especially given everything Shilese has been through that's got to sting. I really hope she makes it on the worlds team. I love her gymnastics.

I mean, didn’t they take one less alternate than expected even? Feels like a definite snub without further info.

I would have been ok with Riley as the fifth alternate too (as a +1 specialist alternate); one could envision a scenario where a bars specialist might be needed. Although I agree that the rank order system used by TF means Shilese should have the final alternate spot.

Not sure why the US wouldn’t want to fill all of its spots? If one gymnast tests positive for COVID, then the entire team including the individual gymnasts might all be required to quarantine, right?

Hard to imagine the decision to stop at four was personal, but I can understand feeling that way — especially since there was no public explanation for the decision.

Exactly. Forster was presented with Shilese or Riley, two world class gymnasts who have both given their entire childhoods to this sport and his answer was no one. He'd rather have no one than give one of those two extraordinary women an olympic experience, even if it was on the sidelines. I'd love to hear his explanation for why that was.

Math is the most logical of arguments. The math of the weekend supports the choice. She was fourth so so was the fourth.
NO.

Tom's own tweet admitted MyKayla would have increased the team score by several tenths. Instead Tom IGNORED THE MATH and chose STRAIGHT RANKING. He ABROGATED HIS RESPONSIBILITY as head of the selection committee. There is no counterargument. None. People can argue for Grace and that's fine. But Tom said none of that, and if we are to believe what he said, he has no place on any selection committee.

No, what you are talking about is roster management not team management. Yes, when Tom is putting together a national team roster from which he selects athletes to compete at worlds etc, it is perfectly reasonable to select girls based upon potential injuries etc. What I am talking about is team management for a specific game/competition/etc. The hawks didn't go out and acquire a point guard for the playoffs because trae young might get injured. The Bucs aren't putting Kyle Trask in to play the opening game over Tom Brady. They put their best team they have each and every time they step out on the field, floor, court.

I can’t listen to Gymcastic podcast anymore. Too much petty drama and inconsistency from them. But the drama is probably how they make their money.

There is rumor floating around that Riley was offered the fifth alternate spot and chose not to take it. Perhaps that’s why there were only four. But again at this points it’s just a rumor.

So many Instagram posts starting with “devastated or shattered”. Honestly the whole thing just makes me feel sad about the sport. Kids basing their entire childhoods on the hopes to make 4 spots. What is left when they do not based on their social media makes me say the whole journey is perhaps not what it should be or even worth it. Hopefully Grace does not read anything cause that poor kid is being run through the ringer.

I haven't seen anyone going after Grace, although I am sure there is somewhere in the dark reaches. We are talking about social media here. Just because people are debating the best make-up of a team doesn't mean people are directly insulting/attacking Grace. I haven't seen anyone on this discussion speaking poorly of Grace for sure.

This is just an opinion. There are many counterarguments.

Rank order is straight math. There is other math that also works.

I never listened to them before, but checked out their latest. Almost every single thing they said was correct, in my view. Glad to see even relative kids can see how poor this choice was, and how bad Tom is at his job.

The 4th spot should have been MyKayla, and individual should have been Riley. MyKayla would have rounded out the strongest team, and Riley would best contribute to our chances for another medal as an individual. That's pure math and reasoning. Any other choice would have to be supported with a valid argument. It wasn't.

If the selection committee is too afraid to actually do their jobs, they should disband or step down. Sorry if I'm repeating myself.

I wasn't saying there are no counterarguments to any given team.

I'm saying there are no counterarguments to the fact that Tom's stated reasons for his choice of team are devoid of even basic reasoning. He failed to do his job, and should no longer have that job.

I've been thinking a lot about the Team with Grace and with Mykayla as the specialist and ... I'm starting to come around to it a little bit. At first, I was very disappointed for Mykayla, because I thought she earned that 4th spot and now will not win a medal with the TEAM.

However, I think they chose Grace because she is more solid overall and can be asked to step-in in a cinch for UB and BB if need be, whereas, I wouldn't necessarily trust Mykalya there.

Grace will provide a solid Vault score (though, the team will lose .4-.5 there with no Mykayla). And really, Grace was outscoring Mykayla on FX lately, so no biggee there (the team might actually gain a few tenths there; and or, if they put Suni Lee in, etc). The discrepancy in scoring is very minimal and, like I said, Grace - with a lot of experience - could step-in on other apparatus if need be.

The big bummer I still feel is for McCusker or Eaker, because both "could" contend for a medal. But really, those would be stretches, too.

So a double crack at Vault Finals for Mykayla and Jade is the way to go, it seems. Based on results lately, it does seem like Mykayla has the slightly better shot there over Jade, anyway.

Also, if Mykayla and Jade decide to do All-Around in Qualifications ... is it Simone, one of Suni/Chiles AND one of the other girls if they all qualify ... or do they still cap it at the 2 persons from the same country rule?

I think they chose Grace because she is more solid overall
Tom already publicly stated he "chose" this team because this was the trials ranking.

I can tell this is going nowhere at this point. I'll just finish by paraphrasing a great point from that podcast:

"Tom's job wasn't to be a piece of paper listing the trials rankings."

While Riley would likely make the event final, a lot of people would probably have to miss for her to medal. And with the rule being that you have to use the +1 first in case of injury to the main team, unless Riley was putting up 15s at trials, she just wasn’t going to be in the running for that spot with her injury. I’m gutted for her, especially after everything she has been through. I would have loved for her to make that team, but it’s logical to see why she wasn’t chosen.

OK, I hear you, but I also don't believe his job was only to input scores into a computer program. If that was the case, we also wouldn't need a selection committee.

I know, I have also felt sad and conflicted about this, especially when I think about parenting my own goal-oriented gymmie. I want to follow her lead and support her as much as possible. But I keep remembering something someone here wrote about making sure kids have several "circles"/outlets so they don't tie their identity to one thing. I think this is possible even for high level gymnasts, but takes lots of proactive work to create that. Hopefully college will be a positive experience for these girls.

Again... this is just your opinion. What I see is very logical reasoning. There are definitely many very logical ways to see this.

Saying the Tom Forster isn't logical doesn't really hit a home run in my mind. Especially since we used his computer program for several years here at my club...

In the history of time, no one has ever had their opinion changed on a message board. At best Tom is a brilliant strategist but poor external communicator. At worst he is a hapless figurehead with little backbone to stand up to a decision that was made. You can tell yourself a logical reason that justifies his actions and you are correct, it is a logical reason, but then he should have explained it and owned it. Otherwise, it is pure conjecture on our parts. I think we can all agree at least on that point :)
