Hello everyone,
I am really hoping this Forum can help me. I have a 15 year old daughter who dreams of going to high school with a gymnastic program somewhere in the US next year. She is currently what corresponds to a Freshman so it will be as a Sophomore. She is a passionate artistic gymnast here in Denmark where we live and is at level 7-8 (not sure if that is fully comparable with the levels in the US).

I have been trying to find a high school in the US with a gymnastic program - preferably at a competitive level but I find it really difficult to navigate through the different high schools webpages. Through a search with both Google and ChatGPT I have found numerous high schools which supposedly have gymnastic programs, but when I visit their webpages I cannot find any information. It is like searching for a needle in a haystack:-(

Fortunately, I found this Forum where I can see that you have some threads on high school gymnastics. If everyone of you could recommend a good high school with a great gymnastic program, I would really appreciate if you could share the name of the school and state/city. All states/cities are of interest, but she is especially interested in Texas but that is secondary. Also if you have any experience of exchange students in the US and high school gymnastic:-)

Thanks!
Lone

Here are some states that I know that have HS gymnastics, and the results from states this past year (I will try to add some more later to the list):

Georgia:

Illinois:

Minnesota:

Ohio:

Wisconsin:

Texas has some schools with high school gymnastics. The rules are around level 8/9 however many of the girls aren’t competing full difficulty and were lower levels before switching to HS so your daughter would likely be fine.

You can view the rules and past meet results here which should give you somewhat of a list of schools that offer it.

In Marysville, Ohio, the high school has a gymnastics team. The team has a great coach and she has grown the program over the years. She has girls on the team from Xcel Gold-Level 8 most seasons. Ohio is the equivalent of Level 8, but with high school bonus, but it is possible to do well with a lower skill level.
The school district's website is: https://www.marysville.k12.oh.us/

There are a number of high schools in the Cleveland, Ohio area with higher level gymnasts. Some of them have also had exchange students in the past.

You should know that high school gymnastics teams (at least in my state) do not train or compete at a high level. They typically have very limited equipment and they only train and compete a few months per year. Typically gymnasts who are competing in our national development program (levels 1-10) do not compete in high school because it conflicts with regular club gymnastics training and the equipment and coaching are relatively unsafe for higher level gymnastics. Most high school gymnasts are girls who have recently quit developmental gymnastics or girls that compete in more recreational gymnastics programs like xcel and AAU.

I just want to make sure that she has realistic expectations for what HS gymnastics actually is.

We have several level 8s on our HS team. They compete for their club thru the beginning of December, stopping once they have their first high school meet ... and going back to their club team as soon as the state meet is over at the beginning of March.

A bit late to the thread but New Jersey also has high school gymnastics: https://www.njsiaa.org/sports/gymnastics. The "groupings" file lists all the schools. I went to school in the Somerset county area and my friends on the team were L7/L8. New Jersey also has the JOGA league which uses the same rules as high school gymnastics, but competes until May. It's designed for gymnasts to do both so there are no worries about conflicting schedules.

Also if you have any experience of exchange students in the US and high school gymnastic:-)
I don't have any experience with high school gymnastics, but I do have experience as a former exchange student (many years ago), and I can tell that I had absolutely no say in which part of the country I went to, much less which specific school I attended. It's possible that this has changed since then, and I don't know which program you are planning to use for the exchange, but you may want to double check with them.

Georgia has a very strong and competitive High School gymnastics program. Most of the gymnasts on the teams are former or current gymnasts. The gymnasts typically train at their local club gym, and do modified routines for high school competitions. In Georgia, it is fine to compete both club and high school at the same time, but I've heard in some states the girls are not allowed to do both at the same time. It works this way: the school needs to declare they have a team the year prior to fielding a team. An employee of the school district must be assigned as the sponsor, one who is willing to organize the team and take care of the finances and the meet sign-ups, and be present at the meets. A volunteer coach is allowed to accompany the gymnasts to the meets. It's better if the coach is also employed by the school district, but sometimes there is no one available. Anyway, I'm sure you can find a high school team if you look at the states that compete HS gymnastics.

I live in North New Jersey and the high school gymnastics here is really good! It’s mostly level 9 rules but most people don’t actually meet full difficulty. Mount Olive, Roxbury, and Randolph are some of the best!
