How many meets per year?

Daughter has 8 including States she's level6. I know most of them are in febuary and march and I am exhausted I could not imagine doing more.
 
I'm confused..

how is everyone's "season" so different? DS had 8 meets, states next week and regionals in April. Why do some have states in the fall?
